I have found freedom and I have found meaning. Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life. How often do I repeat these words and I find the strength and courage to follow the Way - His Will, the Truth and His Life?
Yesterday was a long day that got even longer. After celebrating the seven o'clock Mass at St. Ann I went to visit a beautiful family nearby and they provided me with a much needed hot meal, fantastic friendship and wonderful conversation. As I was driving home, ready to complete the day with an early evening rest (it was already 11:20 pm), I received a text message from a young student I had first met at the minor seminary. A great young man who is currently a freshman studying Philosophy at the University of Dallas. He wanted to get together and talk. I know my schedule well. It was now or not for a few weeks. I was so happy to hear from him after a couple of years of minimal contact. I asked him if he was getting ready to go to sleep. I should have anticipated his response. After all, he is a College student. "Father, the evening is still young." I'm not sure if it was the Holy Spirit or the spirit of stupidity but I found myself making a U-turn and telling him I would be at UD in twenty minutes. I think this all began when I watched at least 10 times the latest Don Bosco movie. I really love this Saint and I truly love the youth. But I have to remind myself that I'm neither.
Our conversation was very philosophical. He is searching for the truth and yet cannot find it. He has placed all things in doubt, even his own existence. He is an extremely intelligent young man but I think his studies have led him to think a little too much and to assume a little too little. During our conversation I was reminded of the words spoken by Festus as he interrupted Paul's defense of the faith. "You are out of your mind, Paul! Your studies are driving you insane" (Acts 26:24). Of course the major difference between Paul and Festus was that Paul had found the truth, first through a revelation and then by reflection. Whereas Festus continued to rely too much on study and not enough on the big elephant in the room: the death and resurrection of Christ and the birth of the Church. The truth is that God has every right to reveal himself to the world. And what he has revealed is the greatest revelation ever to man: God is love. My suggestion to this young man was not to follow the sheep and attend Mass, but rather to begin to love. "If you love, then you will discover God because God is love and we were made to fall in love. That is, we were made to fall in God's arms.
If I do not know God and what He did, then I will not know who I am and what I should do. If I do not know who I am and what I should do, then I will end up hating who I am and wishing I was never born. Eventually, I will end up hating myself and all those around me. God is love and we were created to love and be loved. We can never forget the big elephant in the tomb!
We look for signs, but signs will never be enough. They weren't enough for the Pharisees and the Scribes and they will never be enough for me. We look for wisdom, but we will never be as wise as the wisest of men, or as wise as God. We are finite and He is infinite. We are a bug and he is a Giant. But He became finite so that we could become infinite.
Blessed be the name of the Lord forever. Blessed be His name, Father and Love. We are children of the Light - free to love and to be loved.

MESSAGES AND SIGNS, VISITS AND PREMONITIONS
This month a new book has been written by Bonnie McEneaney concerning the messages from loved ones that died on 9/11 to their relatives.
Many years ago I met a family that had evidence that life exists beyond this one. This is their story.
Madeline and Mason Longmire lived at Angle Lake, Washington. Madeline's sons were both Alaska airline pilots flying back and forth from Seattle to Alaska. They were twins, Bud and Bill Donovan.
One night Madeline was awakened by the house shaking and Bill's dog howling. She knew something had happened to her son. Sure enough his plane had crashed and there were no survivors, in fact the bodies could not be recovered either.
From that point on Madeline would receive messages that she felt were from her son. The radio would come on and it would be playing MOTHER. She would smell roses in the house, which was her favorite flower.
Madeline was a strong Catholic so when faces started appearing in the wood in their family room she asked the local priest to come and see them and tell her what he thought. He told her he was familiar with such things but "it would be best for her not to come back to church and upset the parishioners"! She took him at his word and did not return after such an insult.
In England there were many psychics well known for their abilities. She wrote to Maurice Barbanell to see if he could find anything out about her son. He had already received a message from her son giving his Mother's name and address. He had asked Maurice to make a tape and send it to her which he promptly did.
Her son said he was alive and well and that he loved her. He asked her to start meditating and he would try to come to her. She developed rapidly. I know because I used to go to her house and sit in meditation with them.
After receiving the tape she went to the Aquarian Foundation in Seattle. Keith Rhinehart was a well known medium with extraordinary gifts. He could produce apports and materializations out of ectoplasm. Madeline made an appointment with Keith for a materialization seance. When her son appeared in his pilot uniform he told her "Mother, I am going to give everyone in this room what you have put down the front of your dress." She hadn't told anyone that she had put a fresh rose down her dress. Everyone had a fresh rose dropped into their laps.
Being still skeptical, Madeline asked if he could get with the scientists on his plane of existence to give her something the next week that would prove it was him. He said he would try.
When Madeline went back the next week he appeared again and told her to hold out her hands. He dropped the very rosary she had bought him in Italy at the Vatican the Pope had blessed. His brother had one exactly like it Madeline had bought at the same time. The rosary hung over Bill's picture in their house. There was nothing recovered from the plane wreck in the way of personal items but Bill and the scientists had recovered the rosary somehow and gave it to Madeline to prove that life goes on and that they are aware of us. They try to show us in many ways, just as this new book is saying that the victims of 9/11 have done with their loved ones.

In college I absorbed the prevailing idea that religion in general, and Christianity in particular, was just a historical curiosity, and that science could explain everything. By the time I was in my mid-to-late twenties, I was convinced that there was no God (or any spiritual reality). I did not believe that I had a soul; I thought I was just an intelligent animal, and that when I died, my consciousness would simply blink out. I thought that there was no ultimate meaning in life, and that people who believed in any form of God were seriously self-deluded. It was a bit depressing, but I believed it to be the best explanation of the way the world is, and truth is better than false comfort. If that's not atheism, I'm not sure what counts...
...[C]lassic Christian literature planted seeds in my imagination as a young girl, something I write about in more detail in my book. Later, Christian authors provided dissenting voices to the naturalistic narrative that I'd accepted-the only possible dissenting voice, since I wasn't interested in reading anything that directly dealt with the subject of faith or Christianity, and thus wasn't exposed to serious Christian thought.
I found that my favorite authors were men and women of deep Christian faith. C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien above all; and then the poets: Gerard Manley Hopkins, George Herbert, John Donne, and others. Their work was unsettling to my atheist convictions, in part because I couldn't sort their poetry into neat 'religious' and 'non-religious' categories; their faith infused all their work, and the poems that most moved me, from Hopkins' "The Windhover" to Donne's Holy Sonnets, were explicitly Christian. I tried to view their faith as a something I could separate from the aesthetic power of their writing, but that kind of compartmentalization didn't work well, especially not with a work of literature as rich and complex as "The Lord of the Rings".
Eventually, I came to the conclusion that I needed to ask more questions. I needed to find out what a man like Donne meant when he talked about faith in God, because whatever he meant, it didn't seem to be 'blind faith, contrary to reason'.....
I read a lot of books! C.S. Lewis's "Mere Christianity" was one of the most important ones, particularly with regard to his moral argument, but also for the way that he provides vivid images and analogies to illuminate what words like 'faith' and 'repentance' mean.
For the philosophical and historical questions, I was particularly helped by a book called "Does God Exist?", a debate between J.P. Moreland (a Christian) and Kai Nielsen (an atheist), articles by philosopher William Lane Craig, and the book "In Defense of Miracles", which includes David Hume's famous argument against miracles as well as arguments for the possibility of miracles. One of the most important books I read was N.T. Wright's magisterial scholarly work "The Resurrection of the Son of God", which convinced me that the Resurrection was a fact of history.
Literature also helped me along the way. In particular, the "Chronicles of Narnia" helped me connect my intellect and my imagination, so that I grasped the meaning of the Incarnation and saw its importance not as an abstract idea, but as something that impacted my life..... Sarah Young wrote a successful book titled "Jesus Calling." The book's blurb states,

"Journaling" is a new kind of activity that the New Agers are calling a spiritual discipline. Beth Moore does it, that is, she listens for God and accepts the force that comes and guides her very hand into writing things that are not from her own brain. I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP. You can learn more about why journaling to listen for God, is not a spiritual discipline but in fact is a FALSE SPIRITUAL ACTIVITY.
In any case, this blog entry is not about Sarah Young's book. It is about reaction to criticism of Sarah Young's book. Pastor Robert Allen King wrote "A CHRISTIAN REBUTTAL TO SARAH YOUNG'S 'JESUS CALLING"'" and released it on Kindle. A slim volume, the book goes through
"Young's erroneous method of placing her own personal reflections and meditations from her quiet time with God into the mouth of Jesus, infusing them with a false divine authority that will mislead her readers. The booklet will also go over the false teachings and incorrect theological concepts that have been presented to the world under the guise of approval by Jesus"."

Each day the heated rhetoric and the hate against Christians from people who call "themselves "Christians is getting hotter and hotter, higher and higher. Daily, it seems, the vitriol against speaking the truth in love is rising. No one seems to be allowed by the liberal or false element to judge, discern, criticize; nor to compare a speech, sermon, or work to scripture. None of that. We are supposed to accept anything and everything as long as the name "Jesus" is attached. Unquestioningly and wholly.

The subtitle should be a clue to the contents of this book. This is a collection of tweets that summarize every chapter of the Bible. If you're not familiar with Twitter, it is a very popular social media application that allows a person to send messages using no more than 140 characters. In other words, it majors in conciseness. For those who've not only joined Twitter, but who also follow Jana Riess on Twitter, you likely already know what The Twible "is. Several years ago, Riess began reading through the Bible, from cover to cover, and writing brief, often humorous chapter summaries, which she shared on Twitter. This isn't something I would have tried to do, but she has gained quite a following because of it (I too am a follower). Now, one needn't be on Twitter to benefit from Jana's reflections, for they now appear in book form. For those who have been thinking about reading the Bible from cover to cover but have been deterred by the length of the Bible, this could be a boon. In thinking about what to say about the book, I decided that I should start off by offering a warning. I could suggest the book to specific audiences, but in this case it seems appropriate to note who this book might not appeal to.So, if you don't like Twitter, you probably won't like this book; it is a collection of s. More importantly, if you don't have a sense of humor, you really won't like this collection. And, if you believe that every word in the Bible is not only inerrant but must be treated with such reverence that to either question it or try to be humorous with it will attract divine wrath, then you won't want to pick up this book. The same goes for those who treat the Bible with great disdain, believing that it is simply a collection of dangerous fairy tales. Why? I think you might misunderstand what Jana is trying to do. Jana is the author of "Flunking Sainthood: A Year of Breaking the Sabbath, Forgetting to Pray, and Still Loving My Neighbor, "(Paraclete, 2011). She is also an editor, who has worked with several publishing companies and blogs for Religion News Service. She has a rather interesting religious background, being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon), while being fully engaged in the Emergent Conversation. Not only that, but she has a Master's of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in American Religion from Columbia University. More specific to this book, Jana confesses to have both a great love and respect for the Bible. It is important to know this because she pushes boundaries, using humor to stimulate not only laughter but thoughtful reflection on the message of Scripture in all its complexity. As one reads through these s, one is forced to recognize that there are many passages in Scripture that are to put it mildly - problematic. Too often we sweep them under the rug. But Jana doesn't allow us to do this. Indeed, she is at her best when dealing with passages that deal with things like genocide and rape and exclusion. We want to laugh, and yet as we laugh we begin to see the darkness in these passages. She forces us to go back and rethink the way we understand God and read these texts. "The Twible " is a self-published project. Jana never really tells us why she went this direction. While it's true that more and more people are turning to this means of publishing, and Jana surely understands the business of publishing, I'm wondering whether the publishers she works with found this to be a bit too hot to handle. I don't know this for sure, but it is an interesting question to consider. There are also frequent sidebars that explain or lift up elements of the story (like any good study Bible would - only hers contain much more humor than the "Oxford Annotated NRSV" or the "NIV Study Bible"). At the back of the book you'll find notes that will lead you into helpful discussions. And in a very helpful move, she provides a "Whos's Who in the Twible" section. This is helpful because one must, quite often, abbreviate names in a. Thus God is referred to as G and Jesus as JC, and so on. It is important to reiterate here the importance of having a sense of humor in approaching this collection. In fact, the material here is edgy, even snarky, which will give Biblical literalists from Al Mohler to Sam Harris considerable headaches. Jana Riess doesn't disdain or seek to disrespect the Bible. In fact, she wants the users of this book to gain, as she did in the process of creating it, a better sense of the scope and story that is contained in this exceedingly complex piece of sacred literature. She writes:In short, the Bible is wildly complicated. "The Twible, "by contrast, is pretty simple. It's goal is to make you laugh. If you learn something along the way, as I have, all the better." (p. xii). It is definitely filled with humor, and if you have a sense of humor you will laugh, but there is more to this project than laughter. Jana puts her finger on a major problem of our day - the increasing biblical illiteracy present not just in the general public, but within Jewish and Christian communities. While she insists that the "main purpose of this project has always been to bring levity to an all-too-serious subject," there is more to this project than that. Indeed, she notes that the "second-greatest compliment I've gotten is when people tell me that "The Twible "has actually sent them to the original Bible to see for themselves what these stories have to say" (p. xii-xiii). The fact is - if you're open to it, this book should accomplish both! Reading this as a mid-fifties Baby Boomer preacher/scholar I can say that I truly enjoyed it. But, I think that its real audience is those of younger generations, generations who are increasingly uncomfortable with traditional religion and may find themselves steering clear of sacred literature. My hope and prayer is that this book will open hearts and minds to the Good News! That is the hope that I as a pastor have for this project.

For those of you who do not know who the Amazing Randy is, he has made it his life's work to debunk people calming to have magic or psychic powers. If memory serves me he offers one million dollars if you can prove you are liget.

From CNN comes more news of Witchcraft allegation in Africa. This story focuses mostly on children, but I have seen way to many resent Witchcraft stories out of Africa in the news over the last few months. Simply google Witchcraft with Africa and look at how many news results you get it is scary. I have blog post in mind about this and may write it soon.

Note: I do this thing with reproducing Shakespeare, where I ignore the block-verse format customary with his work (a convention of the Elizabethan era), and render his words as direct sentences (how we are accustomed to reading and understanding dialogue, such as Shakespeare's plays present.) My belief is that this assists in the comprehension of what his characters are saying (who are speaking dialogue, after all). I have done the same here, despite the fact that "Venus and Adonis" is a formal poem, out of a hope that readers will find the verse easier to read if they can follow the sense of the lines straightforwardly, from the beginning to the end of the sentences. Other than capitalizing pronouns associated with Venus and Mars (in order to better render a sense of Their Divinity), I have not made any changes to the text.

When I first heard the term I thought this was just another one of those confusing Catholic terms. Magisterium is the english equivalent of the latin word for teacher= magister. The Magisterium is the living, teaching office of the Catholic Church. Simply put, the Magisterium has the task and responsibility of interpreting the Word of God.
Non-Catholics bristle at this notion, as I once did too, and insist that each one of us has the ability to interpret Scripture for themselves based on their membership in the body of Christ. The problem that arises is when private interpretation of Scripture leads to divergent and oftentimes opposing views. Ultimately divisions and branches are formed when each party holds to their own particular interpretation of Scripture. I struggle with the notion of "private interpretation" because it implies that Jesus, who gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us in all Truth, is allowing certain bits of Truth to be "up for grabs." These areas of divergent opinion are sometimes termed the "non-essentials" but often they are about salvation/eternal security/meaning of Baptism, and are indeed very essential truths.
In my discussion with brethren who hold to the idea of Sola Scriptura (That all truth must be contained in the Bible alone), they insist we need no magisterium to tell us what to believe because the Bible doesn't mention it explicitly. They say that their own interpretation of Scripture is the correct one since "it comes directly from the Word of God" and they just let "scripture interpret scripture." I wish it was that easy! Even Luther at some point bemoaned "private interpretation" when he said "Every man that has a head has become his own pope!"

I submit that "NO MAN IS AN ISLAND" particularly when it comes to developing a theology /belief system and in actuality, every man does subscribe and submit to his own "magisterium." You do and I do. It may be the magisterium of their favorite pastor or bible teacher, or the magisterium of their personal friends who they are in agreement with regarding areas of faith and morals. It could be the magisterium of "Radio Bible Class" or it can be the Chinese Restaurant Magisterium (I'll take one of those from Column A and two of those from Column B) Which is what I did for many years! In other words, none of us, if we are completely honest, study the Bible with a totally blank and open mind (skull full of mush so to speak) and let the Holy Spirit give us the correct interpretation of Scripture. We rely on our past religious education, denominational affiliations, memories, and moral inclinations and experiences. It would be impossible to do otherwise.
Catholics and Non- Catholics both have a magisterium. It's just that we believe our Magisterium is the teaching authority Christ entrusted to his apostles when he established the Church on Peter. We believe this has continued in apostolic succession through the ages even despite some popes who were real scoundrels. However, when it came to issues of faith and morals, even the stinkers didn't pervert or twist truth. That was the Holy Spirit's divine protection and the "charism of infallibility."
Jesus did not leave us alone, but in his kindness and mercy left us with the Paraclete who will lead us in all truth. Catholics believe this process occurs via the Magisterium of the Church. The way I see it, the things our Lord wants us to know about Him are too precious to be left to chance and our own admittedly fallible private interpretation. So Jesus gave us His Church through which the Holy Spirit continues to guide us infallibly through fallible men. We believe scripture supports this view in Timothy, when Paul tells the people that the household of God, the Church, is the pillar and foundation of truth. (II Timothy 3:16)
This is what the Catechism says about it:
"The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living, teaching office of the Church alone. Its authority in this matter is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ. This means that the task of interpretation has been entrusted to the bishops in communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome."
CCC 86 "YET THIS MAGISTERIUM IS NOT SUPERIOR TO THE WORD OF GOD, BUT IS ITS SERVANT. It teaches only what has been handed on to it. At the divine command and with the help of the Holy Spirit, it listens to this devotedly, guards it with dedication, and expounds it faithfully. All that it proposes for belief as being divinely revealed is drawn from this single deposit of faith."
CCC 890 "The mission of the Magisterium is linked to the definitive nature of the covenant established by God with his people in Christ. IT IS THIS MAGISTERIUM'S TASK TO PRESERVE GOD'S PEOPLE FROM DEVIATIONS AND DEFECTIONS AND TO GUARANTEE THEM THE OBJECTIVE POSSIBILITY OF PROFESSING THE TRUE FAITH WITHOUT ERROR. Thus, the pastoral duty of the Magisterium is aimed at seeing to it that the People of God abides in the truth that liberates. To fulfill this service, Christ endowed the Church's shepherds with the charism of infallibility in matters of faith and morals. The exercise of this charism has several forms."
This is a fascinating post. Sound, in an analog form, has powerful healing and mind expanding effects. Digital sound is not capable of producing this due to the lack of resolution and harmonics.
Mystics the world over have attested to the power of sound and there are many cultures that use chanting in meditative techniques to expand the mind and consciousness. This is supported in science with Cymatics an the concept of a Sympathetic Universe.
I have been experimenting with chanting meditations for several months how. The human voices is perfectly calibrated for human beings, and YOUR voice in particular, can create feedback effects, healing a great many things. When I do these types of meditations, my third eye tingles with sensation, and I have I am left feeling totally at one with the NOW.

ORBS AND VOICES IN MY HEAD

This well known long-term approach to development supports dignity and freedom. Gestures of charity are replaced with an enduring strategy of friendship and respect, which enables people to support themselves.
This surely is also the best way to approach spirituality. Instead of feeding people beliefs and experiences, our job is to give people the tools and strategies to manage their own spiritual journeys.
The short-term fix can be a life-saver and also very gratifying for the donor's ego, but in the long-term we all deserve independence and respect.
It was because of this that my parents were hostile to religion and spirituality. They were committed to social justice and human rights, and they thought that religion and spirituality were just superstitious and manipulative ways to stop people thinking and acting for themselves. They were good humanists.
Like many children, however, I was having spiritual experiences from an early age, feeling the wonder and magic of existence. I was also empathic and could easily sense energies and vibrations, occasionally having clear psychic experiences. But because of my parents' scepticism I could not talk to them about any of this.
They were so hostile to anything religious that when I was twenty-five years old and took a two-year spiritual retreat, my dad was certain that my only motivation for leaving the country was to dodge taxes. For him, tax-dodging was more acceptable than spirituality.
MY INNER PARENTS
For better or for worse - I think for the better - I have had mum and dad in my psyche all through my spiritual journey. They are part of an ongoing internal dialogue in which I explain spiritual ideas to a sceptic or cynic.
Sometimes I entertain myself with the idea that my mum and dad finally understood spirituality shortly after they had died and, astonished, found they were still alive. In fact, I strongly experienced my father coming back to me soon after his death and saying warmly whoops sorry I like it here forgive me I love you.
So, partly because I am their son, I have a careful mind that always monitors my spiritual journey, looking out for the usual daemons of delusion, pomposity, elitism and ignorance. I especially scan for any attitude that might undermine freedom and intelligent enquiry.
A NEW VOICE IN MY HEAD
It therefore was not easy for me when twenty years ago I suddenly heard a voice in my head wanting to speak through me. Embarrassed and confused, I told Sabrina what I was experiencing. She comes from a long line of healers and psychics and was very relaxed. 'Let it speak,' she encouraged.
This voice then wrote a book through me. This was a very strange experience and totally different from writing my other books.
I feel uncomfortable about my role as a channel or medium. My parents, my doctorate in psychology, the decades of watchful meditation, my disciplined training as an energy worker - all of this makes me cautious around channeling and suspicious of someone (in this case, me) who doesn't think for himself, but just acts as a conduit. Paradoxically of course I am very comfortable with being an open vessel when it comes to healing or surrendering to the flow of spirit.
So I decided to remain silent about this voice in my head.
I put the manuscript away in a cupboard for ten years, but then a friend found it and encouraged its publication as The Christ Sparks. Still embarrassed, I didn't publicize the book at all and was grateful when it did not sell well and went out of print.
Nevertheless I stayed in communication with the voice and enjoyed its company. Often, when faced with situations that I cannot understand, I ask for its perspective and receive useful insights.
Luckily, I like what the Orbs say. They say that they are a swarm of friendly beings who have come as friends to help and heal the human family. They explain how, because of ancient history, human beings feel more trusting with plants, nature and animals than with each other. They say they can help heal this sad wound that divides us. They talk about the way in which we form groups with people we never see and how our bodies are connected and interdependent. They give many useful insights and their message is hopeful. They also suggest many ideas and activities that we can explore for ourselves.
Nevertheless I can still hear echoes of my mother's sceptical voice with her lilting New York accent. 'Really, wouldn't you rather be lecturing at Yale or Harvard!' she once admonished when she heard I was touring America giving lectures on angels and meditation.
But she is on the other side now and probably knows more about Orbs and angels than I do, perhaps attending or even giving lectures in the Great Halls of Learning. In that dimension, she probably accepts all phenomena in the same way that we enjoy a soft, warm summer rain.
