Heka by Ceremonial Magician David Rankine is a very special book. Slender yet packed with information that will enlighten you of the Egyptian world view and magick. It is scholarly yet easy to read for the common lay man. In the Babylonian Talmud it is stated that God gave 10 measures of magic to the world 9 of those went to Egypt.
Heka is the magical power that is inherent in every being, human, animal and plant. There are some being that have more Heka then others. It is said the dead have a very powerful Heka even more of it then the living. Gods have the most. In the earthly physical realm it is said that dwarves and people with red hair have very strong heka.
The magical power of Heka is executed through the power of the spoken word. Incantations and spells had as their most powerful component the spoken word. Words that were spoken had the power top shape reality. Heka was also the name of the God of Magic. Magic was Heka's main thing.
Heka was not the only magical God. Thoth who was also a god of learning and wisdom as well as a lunar god was a god of magic. Isis, who learned Re's name stole magic from Re and thus had the power of creation. Having someone's name meant that you had power over them. There were three of four gods that are supposedly creator Gods depending on which part of Egypt you are talking about. Some parts say it was Re, others Amun and yet others say it was Ptah. It was said that Ptah created the world and universe with the utterances of his mouth.
The God Heka is considered to be the soul or Ka or Ra. Heka is sometime said to be the BA or Re as well. Heka thus uis the seeming magical and creative soul aspect of Re. Another possible sould or Re was the Goddess Maat. Pharoahs, priests and common citizens had a vested interest in maitianing the concept of Maat. Maat is then seen as the goddess of truth and the universal order over chaos. In may depictions she is called the Daughter of Re and stands directly behind him. As the religion evolved she too becamke part of his soul.
The book give a thorough over view of the creation story. Nuit was the sky and Geb was the earth. The creator god was jealous and so he command the sky called Shu to separate them. Thoth then a moon god somehjow created a five day gap where in they were able to birth out 5 children. One of them was Horus the Elder, Isis, Osiris and Set. The earth was also a primeval sea called Nun. From it came the Ben Ben or ann island. The five gods including Re was on a Solar Baque and ended up fighting Apohis the serpent.
Kheper is the beetle god who pushes Re across the sky in his sun chariot. He is also a guardian for the dead and is considered a protective god along with Sekhmet, Bes and Bastet. Scarabs were worn by the dead to protect them. In this life people wore then as well. In order to accom[pany Re the worshipper can light Frenakinscence in the morning, Myrrh in the afternoon and Kyphi at night.
The book is loaded. It has incense recipes that are simple and easy to make. There are table for all the god and day that are good for doing magic. The God table inform the reader what the God did and what things are associated with the god. There is a table of hours holy to the deities based on a twelve hour rotation and a chapter on the meaning of the colors. I can and will say that this book has all that and more.
Once you read this you will see how Egyptian Magic gave birth to Ceremonial Magic and Witch craft. Ideas like dietary restraction, cleanliness and circumcision were mentioned first in Egyptian scripture. Religions like Islam, Judaism and Christianity learned a lot from the Egyptians.
My one criticism is that the book could have been bit longer and delved into some of the numerous holidays the Egyptians had for their deities. But then perhaps that is a subject for another book..

Western esoteric mysticism and/or angel magick comes primarily from the Middle East. Most European ideas were brought over via the old testament. But the Hebrews who wrote the old testament were influenced by a variety of systems. The systems came from Sumeria, Babylon, Egypt, Persia and Arabia. Each of these countries had a system of gods numbering seven, one for each off the known planets including the sun and the moon.
According to biblical legend Lucifer was God's lead angel, who lead a rebellion and was ultimately cast down into the earthly realms along with his cohort of angels. These Angels took on human form and were thus called watchers. Eventually these watchers fell in love with human women and mated with them giving rise to a race of people called the nephilim. These were giant people with magical powers. Eventually the Flood would come and wash them all away.
According to the Yezidis of Northern Iraq Satan who is called Melek Taus was redeemed. Supposedly he cried out tears of repentance and he was the angel in charge of all the other angels. He is worshiped as a peacock. Interesting that the throne in Iran was called the peacock throne.
According to Luciferian witch craft Lucifer the light bringer ascended for the reason of bringing mankind, who at the time were savages, into enlightenment. When Lucifer and his angles descended they taught human kind religion, civilization, magick and metal working. Now remember that Tubal Cain was a metal worker and metal workers had magical abilities. Of course Christianity turned Lucifer into a boogey man called Satan.
There was documents of giant races documented through out thee world in places like Shamabalah, Atlantis, Arabia and even Amorites. They were big and supposedly had magical abilities. Later on they would be wiped out by the flood. Many mythologies talk about a race of giants being wiped out by newer gods or being wiped out by some cataclysm. Check out the titans in Greek mythology and the Jotuns in Norse mythology.
Many symbols have been perverted in Judeo Christian Europe. The snake was typically a symbol of wisdom. Recall that it was the snake who told Eve to eat from the tree of knowledge to help open her eyes so she could grow up. In the bible the snake wass turned into something evil. The Tower of Babylon which Nimrod, another giant, tried to ascend was not a tower to challenge god but rather it was representative of the Watcher trying to reach godliness and redemption. The Tree had a similar meaning and in fact old religions worshipped the tree or by a tree.
Lilith in Babylonian mytholgy used to live in a tree until Inanna told Gilgamesh to cut it down. In this tree there dweelt an owl and a snake. The owl was a symbol of certain Goddesses and wisdom. Lilith later became Adams first wife and she in fact later left him because she would not submit to an inferior position. Lilith would copulate with animals and other entities and would give rise to a race of demons. Lilith was a succubus who seduced men in their sleep. It said that from man's liquids came several races of Demon. Some say that Lilith gave birth to the faery people. Women use her as model for liberation.
Queen Sheba is sometimes equated with Lilith in that some legends portray her as having owl feet or cloven feet. Sheba means seven and corresponds to the seven angels. It is surmised that Queen Sheba and Solomon were occultist and that Solomon who controlled demons to build his empire taught Sheba some of her secrets.
Occult wisdom which originated in the Middle East came to Europe via many directions. One direction was Jews bringing it over when they were enslaved by the Romans.Occult knowledge also came over when the Crusaders and Templar knights returned from fighting in Jerusalem. The founder of the rosy cross order learned Cabbalah in Damscus and the horned god came from the Middle East as well.

Most people remember the long battle to have the Pentacle included in the VA's list of registered religious symbols available for inclusion, which was only made public, let alone resolved, in the past couple of years. I had heard of such a movement for the mjollnir, or Thor's hammer, to be included for those who follow Asatru. I was doing some digging online and ran across a site for just such a movement that has a petition. The petition is called the Hammer Project, and is set up by an organization called the Asatru Folk Assembly. The word "Asatru" translates to mean "those loyal to the Gods", and is a reclaiming of traditional Germanic religion, much as Druidry is a reclaiming of traditional Celtic religion. They are a smaller community than either Wicca or Druidry in North America, but I think it would behoove us to remember our fellow Pagans who reverence their native Gods, and especially those who risk their very lives for us and our religious freedoms.The Hammer Project can be found here.The Asatru Folk Assembly can be found here.

"Almost twenty years ago I read Ben Patterson's Waiting: Finding Hope When God Seems Silent". It had a profound effect on my attitude about "the problem of pain." As a result it is one of those books I keep on hand to give away. Today Kevin DeYoung recommends a couple of books Patterson has written about prayer, including "God's Prayer Book: The Power and Pleasure of Praying the Psalms" from which he provides this quotation:Prayer is more than a tool for self-expression, a means to get God to give us what we want. It is a means he uses to give us what he wants, and to teach us to want what he wants. Holy Scripture in general, and the Psalms in particular, teach us who God is and what he wants to give.
When the members of his synagogue complained that the words of the liturgy did not express what they felt, Abraham Heschel, the great philosopher of religion, replied wisely and very biblically. He told them that the liturgy wasn't supposed to express what they felt; they were supposed to feel what the liturgy expressed. Tonight under THE BLOOD MOON is NEW YEAR'S EVE in Long Beach as in Bangladesh (the VANGA KINGDOM next to the MAGADHA KINGDOM), formerly regions in ancient Buddhist India.
The region (now a Muslim country) was part of modern India up until 1947 when it was created overnight by the exiting British colonial power's Partition).
The Bangladeshi Theravada Buddhist community has two temples in California, one here and one in Riverside. Long Beach is an industrial port town of Los Angeles -- where the Queen Mary and Spruce Goose are docked, an enormous glass pyramid stands as a beacon to wisdom (CSULB), and where the Dalai Lama used to make annual visits to teach -- as it abuts Orange County.
The area is full of Buddhist temples: Cambodian and Thai "Wats", a Japanese "pagoda", a Tibetan "gompa", a Chinese nunnery dedicated to Kwan Yin (formerly Catholic), and Vietnamese Buddhist temples as well. Gathering to remember the Buddha, the community recited the precepts and the Abbot spoke of VEN. DHAMMIKA's book on the place where Siddhartha gained liberating insight to become the Buddha, the great teacher of the Dharma.

Bodh Gaya is a large village in the southern part of the Indian state of BIHAR (VIHARAS"). The environment around the village is rural, being made up of cultivated areas interspersed with open ground on which grow mango, tamarind, and palm trees. Beside the village flows the wide but shallow LILAJAN RIVER.
In Buddhist texts, the river is call Neranjara, a name derived form the words pleasant ("nelan") or alternatively blue ("nila") and water ("jalam"). About a mile downstream from Bodh Gaya, the Lilanjan joins the MOHANA to form the PHALGU RIVER, which flows past Gaya and is considered sacred to Hindus.

Great CLAN TERRITORIES of ancient India
The name Bodh Gaya has been spelled variously as Buddha Gaya, Boodha Gaya, Buddh Gya, Bauddha Gyah," and "Bodhi Gaya". In any of its forms, it is not an old name, first occurring in the spurious inscription of Amaradeva, a document of uncertain but recent date ("Buddha Gaya: the Great Buddhist Temple, the Hermitage of Sakya Muni", Rajendralala Mitra, 1878, p.201).
At the time of the Buddha, the village was named Uruvela. According to Dharmapala, it was given this name because of a large amount of sand ("vela") in the area. He tells a delightful story to explain all the sand:
"
Siddhartha finds a pleasant riverside grove and sturdy tropical tree for striving.
.[THE SAND, ALL THIS SAND!]In the distant past, long before the Buddha, a company of wandering ascetics lived in the area. They could tell who among them had committed an unwholesome bodily or verbal deed but not if they had had an unwholesome thought. So they came to an agreement among themselves that whoever should think an unwholesome thought would bring sand in a leaf basket. Soon the entire area was covered with sand (Udana Atthakatha", p.26).
Other sources say the village was given the name on account of a vilva tree ("Aegie marmelas") growing nearby ("ASI", 1908-09, p.144). It seems that within two centuries of the Buddha's great awakening, the name Uruvela fell out of use and was replaced by four other names:

The oldest and now least commonly used of these names was Sambodhi, meaning "complete enlightenment." In the Eighth Rock Edict issued in 256 BCE, Indian Emperor ASOKA SAYS HE "WENT TO SAMBODHI" (ayaya Sambodhi") referring to his pilgrimage to Bodh Gaya four year earlier ("The Edicts of King Asoka", Ven. S. Dhammika, 1993, p.12).
Another ancient name, Bodhimanda, refers to the circular area around the Bodhi tree. The "KALINGABODHI JATAKA "describes the Bodhimanda before Siddhartha's enlightenment as being covered with silvery sand without a blade of grass growing on it and with all the surrounding trees and flowering shrubs bending, as if in homage, toward the Bodhi tree ("Jataka", Vol. IV, p.233).
The exact place where the Buddha sat when he was enlightened was called "Vajrasana "meaning the "Diamond or ADAMANTINE Throne."
It is believed that when the universe finally disintegrates, this will be the last place to disappear and that it will be the first place to form when the universe ["WORLD-SYSTEM," possibly simply a galaxy or merely a solar system, "SAKWALA"] begins to re-evolve again.

The ascetic Siddhartha (AB)
The Vajrasana was also sometimes called the "Victory Throne or Palanquin of all Buddhas" ("Sabbabuddhanam Jayapallankam") or "THE NAVEL OF THE EARTH" ("Pathavinabhi") ("Jataka", loc. cit; "Buddhacarita," XIII, 68).
In later centuries, the name "Vajrasana "came to be used for the exact location of Prince Siddhartha's enlightenment, for the temple built over it ("Vajrasana Gandhakuti") [a "KUTI" being a meditation hut, cell, resort, or small hermitage site], then for the general location.
The most widely used and also the most enduring of Bodh Gaya's names was "Maha-Bodhi", meaning "Great Enlightenment." Originally a term for Siddhartha's experience, it later came to be used as the name for the place where that experience had occurred. Alexander Cunningham mentioned that this name was still in vogue in the 19th century ("Mahabodhi or the Great Buddhist Temple Under the Bodhi Tree at Buddha Gaya," reprint, undated, p.2).

The Buddha's experience at Uruvela not only resulted in the location changing its name to Bodh Gaya, but it has also meant that this otherwise obscure village has been the focus of attention for million of pilgrims for over two millennia.
It very early became and remains the most important place of Buddhist pilgrimage (Sanskrit "YATRA"). Those who see Buddhism as an entirely rational religion will insist that it has no place for practices like "pilgrimages."
However, this view is somewhat at odds with what the Buddha is reputed to have said on the subject. Just before his final nirvana, he encouraged all of his followers to visit at least once in their lives FOUR PLACES WHERE PIVOTAL EVENTS IN HIS LIFE OCCURRED: birth (Lumbini), enlightenment (Bodh Gaya), teaching (Isipatana), and passing (Kusinara).

"Ananda, there are four places the sight of which will arouse strong emotion in those with confidence ("SADDHA", conviction, faith). Where are these four? 'Here the TATHAGATA [the Wayfarer, the Welcome One, the Well-Gone One, the Buddha] was born' is the first place. 'Here the Tathagata attained enlightenment' is the second place. 'Here the Tathagata SET ROLLING THE WHEEL OF THE DHARMA' is the third place. 'Here the Tathagata passed into FINAL-NIRVANA WITHOUT REMAINDER' is the fourth place. "The monastic or layperson who has confidence [in the Buddha's enlightenment, the Dharma's ability to lead those who practice in accordance with it to enlightenment, and the NOBLE "SANGHA"'s success by having practiced] should visit these places. Anyone who dies while making the pilgrimage to these destinations with a devoted heart will, at the break up of the body, be reborn in [A] HEAVEN" ("Digha Nikaya, Long Discourses of the Buddha," Vol. II, p.147).

While it is true that the Buddha had high regard for reason and intellect, he did not underestimate the importance of emotion in all human endeavors, including the quest for enlightenment and liberation.
For the devout person seeing the Buddha or simply recollecting him ("BUDDHANUSSATI") can evoke a joy which, when channeled and purified, can be transformational.
Going to a place made sacred by the Buddha's presence, or even the process of getting there, can have a similar effect. On the open road, away from mundane preoccupations and familiar surroundings, the pilgrim has time to think about her life and practice of the Dharma.
The arduous, steady progress toward the goal may become analogous to the pilgrim's journey on the NOBLE EIGHTFOLD PATH and stimulate the determination to walk the Path with more commitment. On finally reaching the goal, the pilgrim will see places and sights associated with the Buddha, which can arouse intense conviction and provide the opportunity for deep contemplation.
