With just one month to go until it moves into production, The CW's "The Originals" have certainly had fans buzzing as the three main leads have been cast in the form of returning actors Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies and Phoebe Tonkin. But in the meantime, one major new character has been cited in the first plot details as casting is very much underway to find Klaus' old friend and fellow vampire Marcel. Though a face still has yet to be found for the important new role, today our next main actress and first fresh inclusion into the franchise has been found as it seems New Orleans will be greeting its new inhabitants with a little voodoo.Zap2It reports that actress Daniella Pineda as been cast as a new series regular character Sophie for the upcoming "The Vampire Diaries" backdoor spin-off pilot "The Originals". Pineda's character will be a witch and, should the series be picked up to air, it will be the actress' first major role on television.She's described, "Strong and driven, Sophie is a warrior. When the subject of Witches' ointments is mentioned, the infamous "flying ointments" immediately come to mind, at least to those with some interest in the history of Witchcraft and magick. These salves, consisting of psychoactive plants steeped in a fatty base, were rubbed onto the skin to aid in what is known today as astral projection.
These are not the only types of ointments known to Witches and magicians, however. Many others have more earthly uses that correlate to those of oils. In fact, any of the oils mentioned in the Oil section can be converted to ointments simply by adding them to melted beeswax, lard or (in today's world) vegetable shortening.
However made, ointments should ideally be kept in crystal or porcelain containers. Realistically, any jars with tight-fitting lids will do fine. Keep ointments away from heat and light. Be warned - though most of the ointments discussed in this section are fairly innocuous, some of them are poisonous and may be lethal. By including them in this work, there is in no way advocating use of such hazardous mixtures. These ointments form a part of herb magic of long-gone days, and so are included here solely for their historical interest.
MAKING OINTMENTS
Ointments are easily made. They consist simply of herbs or oils and a base. In the past, hog's lard was the preferred base because it was readily available, but vegetable shortening or beeswax produces the best results. The base must be a greasy substance that melts over heat but is solid at room temperature. Some herbalists actually use dinosaur fat (I.e., Vaseline, which is prepared from petroleum)!
There are two basic ways to create magical ointments.
THE SHORTENING METHOD
Gently heat four parts shortening over low heat until liquefied. Watch that it doesn't burn. Add one part dried herbal mixture, blend with a wooden spoon until thoroughly mixed, and continue heating until the shortening has extracted the scent. You should be able to smell it in the air.
Strain through cheesecloth into a heat-proof container, such as a canning jar.
Add one-half teaspoon tincture of benzoin to each pint of ointment as a natural preservative.
Store in a cool, dark place, such as the refrigerator. Ointments should last for weeks or months.
Discard any that turn moldy, and lay in a fresh batch.
THE BEESWAX METHOD
This process creates a more cosmetic ointment without a heavy, greasy feeling. It is best to prepare it with oils rather than herbs, as it is difficult to strain.
If possible, use unbleached beeswax. If not, use what you can find.
Chip it with a large, sharp knife so that you can pack it into a measuring cup.
Place one-fourth cup or so of beeswax in the top of a double boiler (such as a coffee can set into a larger pot of water). Add about one-fourth cup olive, hazelnut, sesame or some other vegetable oil. Stir with a wooden spoon until the wax has melted into the oil.
Remove from the heat and let cool very slightly, until it has just begun to thicken. (This step is taken so that the hot wax won't evaporate the oils.)
Now add the mixed oils to the wax.
Stir thoroughly with a wooden spoon and pour into a heat-proof container.
Label and store in the usual way.
In the recipes that follow, the recommended method of preparation will be mentioned.
EMPOWERING OINTMENTS
Once the ointment is made and has cooled in its jar, empower it with its particular magical need. This vital step, remember, directs the energy within the ointment, readying it for your ritual use.
USING OINTMENTS
Ointments are usually rubbed onto the body to effect various magical changes. As with oils, this is done with visualization and with the knowledge that the ointment will do its work.

-Retirar las flores marchitas.
-Guardar aquello que ya no nos sirve o que no nos guste.
-Poner alguna foto que nos agrade.

-Poner un mandala all'i donde lo podamos ver (mejor si lo hemos pintado nosotros).
-Colocar prismas (o cd's antiguos o rayados) en las ventanas para llenar el lugar con rayos de arco iris.

-Iluminar la habitaci'on con flores o con alguna planta de colores vivos que nos agrade.
-Quemar romero, laurel o ruda.
"Y la lista no termina aqu'i". Cualquier decoration que surja de vuestra intuici'on y que os ayude a limpiar el ambiente, a sentiros mejor y a experimentar un cambio de aires en vuestra casa y, por tanto, de los sentimientos que os transmite puede a~nadirse sin problemas.
Y recordad que no hay obligaci'on alguna de hacer rituales, "no se "deben" llevar a cabo por imperativo. Los rituales son una opci'on para comprender la realidad a partir de lo m'agico. A trav'es de ellos podemos expresar nuestros deseos, nuestros sue~nos, nuestras quimeras.
Sin proscribe, por encima de todo, el ritual es un momento m'agico que" revaloriza" nuestras existencias. Un momento de goce, de ver el mundo de otra manera. "Despierta el inconsciente y a trav'es del simbolismo", que es el lenguaje que comprende y usa aquel, "llega hasta 'el motiv'andolo y llev'andolo a una transformaci'on".
Por ejemplo, imagin'emonos que queremos cambiar un h'abito y solemos decirnos que vamos a hacerlo without hesitation. El inconsciente ignora este deseo porque existe la decoration pero el prop'osito no se lleva a cabo. We have a very involved and different world here with a lot of mysteries. Different realms, angels, demons, humans with uncanny abilities - and hints of far more out there. There's a lot to grasp here, especially since the demons and angels definitely come in different flavours as well - and it's all shrouded in mystery; mystery that's made all the more mysterious by being not entirely like anything I've read before.
I think this book actually manages a decent job with the mystery element in that it resists the urge to be too info-dumpy. Phoebe is somewhat new to the world and rather doubting - but not entirely because her own psychic gifts at least crack the door to the supernatural being possible. She hits the perfect spot between being hardcore cynical and just eating up everything everyone tells her without blinking no matter how outlandish it happens to be. She contrasts well with her partner, Charlie, who can deal with Phoebe's abilities but draws the line of allowing this much woo-woo into his police work and Jack who is right in the middle of all the supernatural. If I have any criticism of the world building it's that I would have actually appreciated a little more information or clarification on some points - perhaps a little more in depth curiosity from Phoebe (part of that is a style choice - she does get the big book of info but it's hard to read and we don't get what she's actually read beyond the fact it's not helpful to her).
I think, even with that curiosity into what the angels are doing in the city, what they're involved in and what their missions are, is probably handled better as being kept a mystery - something to build on in later books especially as this book revealed some interesting and deep questions about Phoebe's past which will likely be explored at the same time. Doubly so because the actual storyline is quite complex - with 3 different murders over 3 different time periods all with 3 different murderers and 3 different families - there's a lot of names. That's a lot of threads. That's a lot of leads. Throw in Phoebe's best friend and her police partner and her family history and a voice in her head and it's very very easy to get lost in all this. I didn't get swamped, but it came close, especially for the first book in a series.
So, I'm torn - I want more information and I think it's kind of dubious that Phoebe didn't push for more, while at the same time thinking the world building we had and the storyline combined to have enough questions and complexities to chew on and more would risk me being rather lost. Similarly with the pacing, I kind of wanted the book to go faster and reveal more of the plot, do more investigating but, again, I would be hopelessly lost if it did.
There are a number of POC characters - Charlie, Phoebe's partner, his family, Suzy her best friend and one of the key witnesses ; these aren't huge characters but beyond Phoebe and Jack no-one really is - they're bigger than any others and somewhat involved in either the plot or Phoebe's life with strong hints that they are/were much more involved. There are no LGBT characters. Phoebe, like many with sensory woo-woo in the genre, touches potential on mental illness but she seems to be actually possessed: so it's more magic pretending to be woo-woo than anything.
