Spiritual practice involves distinguishing between that which is temporary and that which is eternal. Through the sacred texts, such as the Bhagavad-gita, we can understand what this material energy is. It is God's energy. The energy itself is eternal, but its manifestations are temporary. These manifestations are always in the state of transformation. They change by the will of God under the influence of three modes of material nature-Goodness, Passion, and Ignorance, and by the power of the element of time. Thus, everything in this universe is constantly changing. Everything is constantly being created, maintained for sometime, and ultimately destroyed. Every cell is like a universe in itself, going through these processes of creation, maintenance, and destruction. We may look at Himalayan Mountains covered with ice, and they may seem permanent, but even they are made up of molecules and atoms which are always changing. Because of our ignorance it appears that it's the same mountain, but it too is always changing. Our body is also undergoing changes every moment. And the ultimate change where everything culminates, which we sometimes refer as death, is the end of all the change. Therefore, material nature is endlessly mutable. It's always changing. Similarly, all the worldly knowledge that we have accumulated will come to an end at the time of death. Thus, we should get knowledge by studying the sacred texts along with the guidance of true saints. This knowledge is eternal and has a specific purpose-to help us understand God and show us how to surrender to God. It is not our merely our mind, senses or intelligence that will help us understand God. They are all temporary themselves and can not reach the eternal. The sacred texts of Bhakti give information about God. And ultimately we can know God only through deep faith in the process of Bhakti - through devotion. Otherwise God will always remain beyond our perception. Most people remember the long battle to have the Pentacle included in the VA's list of registered religious symbols available for inclusion, which was only made public, let alone resolved, in the past couple of years. I had heard of such a movement for the mjollnir, or Thor's hammer, to be included for those who follow Asatru. I was doing some digging online and ran across a site for just such a movement that has a petition. The petition is called the Hammer Project, and is set up by an organization called the Asatru Folk Assembly. The word "Asatru" translates to mean "those loyal to the Gods", and is a reclaiming of traditional Germanic religion, much as Druidry is a reclaiming of traditional Celtic religion. They are a smaller community than either Wicca or Druidry in North America, but I think it would behoove us to remember our fellow Pagans who reverence their native Gods, and especially those who risk their very lives for us and our religious freedoms.The Hammer Project can be found here.The Asatru Folk Assembly can be found here.

Last Sunday evening I had an opportunity to have dinner with a new convert and his wife. We talked about the blessing of daily Mass, and all agreed how becoming Catholic has provided a new rhythm to our lives. Receiving Our Daily Bread has become a focal point of the day and for me is also a quiet time to pray, reflect, confess and receive.
God has made us to be rhythmic creatures and medical science has recognized the circadian rhythm that is programmed into our physiology. Therefore, it is no surprise that cyclic daily devotions are a part of all religions, not just the Judeo-Christian faiths. The Church has always had specific times of the day set aside for devotions since the early days. This is based on the Jewish devotional practices of praying morning, noon and evening prayers. The apostles met together in the Book of Acts to continue to carry out these prayer times at the third sixth and ninth hour. (Acts 10:3, 9, 16:25)
Later on in the life of the Church the monastic communities developed the Liturgy of the Hours and to this day priests and deacons and religious continue to observe the Divine Office of prayer. This usually consists of a reading from Psalms, with a responsorial, a reflection on the feast day of the saint as well as the gospel reading for the day along with specific prayer intentions.
The Angelus prayer pictured above can be traced back to the 14th century. It was prayed three times a day at the ringing of the Church bells reminding the faithful to stop everything for morning, noon and night prayers. Would that we all had some reminder during the day to take a few moments three times daily to turn our hearts towards Christ. I don't view it as legalistic but a beautiful way the Church takes advantage of the circadian nature of His creation.
When I first went into medical practice and was decorating the waiting room of my office, I bought the Angelus painting above at an art store. I loved the simple beauty of devotion this young couple displayed as they paused in the field to pray. It wasn't until years later and after my conversion that I found out the young couple was praying the Angelus devotion and this was an ancient Catholic devotion.

But I have to think that the honest ones will not resort to such a blatant form of denial. They will likely use more subtle forms in which they try to explain away the failure. "This particular prayer might not have been answered in the way I was seeking," they might say, "but that just means that God had something else in mind for me." Mysterious ways and all that.
For most religious believers, I suspect the "power of prayer" can largely be attributed to confirmation bias. They remember the times their prayers seem to have worked far more vividly than the times prayer has failed. And they actively seek evidence to confirm their belief in prayer, even if considerable interpretation is necessary to make something fit into such an account. This gives them the sense that their prayers are answered far more than is likely to be the case.
I have found some religious believers who are willing to admit that a prayer might have gone unanswered. They usually note that even though it failed in the sense in which they intended it, they still gained something else from the act of praying. Maybe it is an increased sense of calm, clarity, relaxation, or reassurance. I'm usually content to take them at their word that prayer helps them feel better in this way. Without the supernatural baggage, it makes sense that prayer would offer the benefits of meditation or relaxation. In this sense, perhaps unanswered prayers are still beneficial.
If one prays in order to feel better and one does in fact end up feeling better, it makes sense that the prayer would be perceived as having been successful. But once again, no supernatural entities are necessary in such a scenario.

I'm always reading a spiritual book, like "Full of Grace" and have no trouble reading the Bible. However, I don't feel like I'm really spending time with God. My favorite way to pray is to go before the Blessed Sacrament, but somehow this hasn't happened. I need to make a solid schedule for adoration read the Bible, check) but I don't feel like I'm growing closer to God. Mass, adoration & confession, reading the Bible, and vocal prayer (like the Rosary) are the only ways I know in which to grow closer to God. I've found that I enjoy this early morning meditation and I've kept it going longer that my usual meditaions without worrying about the loss of sleep time since I figure the meditation is doing me as much good as sleep would.
The standard advice on dealing with middle-of-the-night awakenings when you can't get back to sleep is to get up and do something else for 15 minutes or more and then return to bed. Meditation strikes me as a particularly good choice for this.

But I've also noted before that 5-HTP often has a bizarre impact on me when I awake by flooding me with ideas for solving problems or for new undertakings. This conflicts with the meditation effort to clear my mind and concentrate on my breathing. The first two times I resorted to meditation last week I was able to gently push away the new idea intrusions and focus on the meditation. But this morning, the new idea flood was at high tide and made my meditation efforts more fragmented. But I kept at it, noting the ideas but then returning to observing my breathing. I was surprised when I stopped to find that I'd spent almost 90 minutes on this back and forth. I tried returning to the bed and to sleep, but gave up. I wasn't upset by this and instead found myself laughing at the battle midway through the process.

I was exceptionally mellow during this Christmas season. Some might say "why wouldn't you be mellow when your daughter takes care of all the cooking and you basically just open the door for the guests and take their coats." But inevitably things happen during the holiday or the build up to it that spark irritation if not anger, Not this year.
In this era of.peripatetic families, I am unusually blessed by having my son and daughter, my three grandchildren, and my great-granddaughter all living in the area. And, even better, we all like each other and get along without tensions. So it was a Merry Christmas
