It came out when I was in high school, jut a bit younger than the characters and I could totally relate to their wanting to gain and use their abilities to make the whole teenage thing a little easier. * A friend told me today that after much deliberation, he and his family members would be migrating to Australia for good. He is a middle-income earner. Money was not his main goals. His relocation was attributed to two factors i.e. education for his children and the future on non-Malays in this country. He seriously feel that the country is no longer safe for non-Malays especially with the rise of the extremist that is pushing for Malay supremacy and the difficulty for non Malays to practice their religion.
* There are two parts of his reasons. One was about education. I must say that I agree with him after seeing the quality of education is seriously degrading. Many of the teachers in the urban setting are financially motivated and educating is secondary. This I have dwell in detail previously. I am more concern about his second reason. This reason is a valid one. We live in a multi-ethnic country and we call ourselves as one nation. And yet, we restrict the right of non-Muslims to practice their religion. It is almost impossible to get permission to built new churches and temples. If approval were granted they are being built outside residential areas. They have to go into commercial or industrial area and the design no longer looks like a church or a temple. The Malays with the weak faith thinks that their religion is compromised by having another prayer house in their midst.
* In areas where there are Mosque, there are no principles and standard ruling that applies on the usage of megaphones. In my own area, I could here the Azan from a neighboring mosque in Sri Ukay (2 km) and yet my mosque is blasting the Azan as if they want the people in KLCC to hear them. I have engaged them privately and have suggested simple things like to do a sound mapping so that soothing Azan could be heard within the mosque membership (Qariah). I am embarrassed with their stand and could no longer find in me to engage them. Now they have now move to the next level i.e. reciting the Quran using the megaphones before Azan. No one (Muslim and non Muslim) in my area object to the need of having Azan but what the people wants is to hear is a soothing Azan with a reasonable volume that is pleasant to the ear. Unfortunately there are powerful, narrow minded people who think it is their right to have Azan as loud as they want to. They think the grandiosity of Islam is related to the loudness of the Azan. The irony is during Azan most of my Muslims and Non Muslims neighbors would close their doors and windows as they cant take it. That includes the people who claims that they cant hear the Azan.
* The non-Malays in my area felt helpless and repressed. I can't blame them. I understand their predicament. They have no avenues to complain. If they complain they worry it may become a big local issue. They are seriously worried about their own and family safety. They live in fear and many has move out and many more planning to do the same. In the end the community will be divided and will split within ethnic lines. Is this what we want for the nation? The psychological fear is real and it is time that we take stock of the matter. As a Muslim, I am disappointed but I am helpless because I cant do anything. The other fellow Muslims neighbors complains behind the scene and dare not to come forward as they dont want to be labelled. We need to ask ourselves where do we want to go as a nation?

Today the Church remembers and celebrates the life and ministry of the little monk, St. Francis of Assisi. He is often remembered as one of the first hippies because of the stylized portrayal in Zifferelli's 70's era film "Brother Sun, Sister Moon." However, he was no "spiritual liteweight" and took the Gospel literally when he read that he should forsake all to follow Christ.
"Announce the kingdom! Possess no gold or silver or copper in your purses, no traveling bag, no sandals, no staff" (see Luke 9:1-3).
He completely emptied himself of all possessions literally removing all his clothes and returning them to his earthly father as a way of announcing his desire to forsake all and follow Christ. Boy, he sure took the Bible literally didn't he? He was known for his devotion to the Eucharist and his care for the poor and the sick. A story is told of his followers asking him to come and rebuke a worldy sinful priest that they were traveling to see. "What are you going to say to him when you see him Francis? they asked. "I am going to ask him to show me his hands so that I may kiss them because those are the hands that bring me Christ in the Eucharist." Wow! The Lord often brings that story to mind when I have critical thoughts about my pastor or a sermon that "didn't meet my approval."
One of the things that brings me no small pleasure is seeing all the creches in all the churches, regardless of denomination during the Christmas season. For it was that tradition of bringing live animals and a baby in a manger to the Church that St. Francis initiated as a way to honor the Savior during Christmas in 1223.
In the last 2 years of his life he received the stigmata and as he was dying asked to have his clothes removed so he would die as our Lord did, naked. His last words were "Be praised, O Lord, for our Sister Death." He looked forward to seeing his savior Jesus after a life of service to Him.
"Most High, Glorious God, enlighten the darkness of our minds. Give us a right faith, a firm hope and a perfect charity, so that we may always and in all things act according to Your Holy Will. Amen."
St. Francis, I ask you today on your feast day, to pray for me to Jesus so that my heart will grow to love Jesus more than the things of this earth. Thank you!

Not this one! Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell kept me intrigued and reading day after day, almost reluctant to finish the last chapters because I didn't want it to end!It's set in an alternative version of 19th century England- a period in which the art of magic has languished for decades and become quite a disreputable occupation. Mr. Norrell, a quiet, scholarly, reclusive gentleman, determines that he alone can restore English magic to its former glory. He tries influencing government and high society with his opinions on magical issues, while at the same time squelching other magicians' aspirations and monopolizing the resources of magical books. Then along comes Jonathan Strange, a daring adventuresome man quite unlike Norrell, who seems to have a natural talent for magic and makes himself Norrell's pupil, later becoming more of a colleague and finally his worst rival. When one of them raises a woman from the dead, a malevolent fairy fixes his attention on them, and it quickly becomes apparent how little these esteemed men actually know about magic; they are only scratching the surface of things far more dangerous and mysterious than they can imagine. I loved how the fairy world was depicted, as existing side-by-side with England, accessible through mirrors and pools, shifting just under the surface of things, like a second skin. The plot is complex, introducing scores of characters and numerous little stories (many in the form of footnotes) that add flavor and flair to the main narrative. I found all these just as interesting as the main events, and lapped up all the rich details. This book feels as much a historical fiction novel (of a time period and style I don't usually read about, so maybe it's opening another door for me there) as it does an epic fantasy. I read about it on so many other blogs before coming across my own copy at a thrift store (fifty cents!) that I don't really know who to give credit for first sparking my interest in reading it.
