The grim news has come to my attention
that something in the world has come unfixed -
owls no longer haunt the fir lined alley
appearing out of the dreamtime as we pass,
indeed whole souls have gone missing, as if being
has itself gone dim - like an old man's seeing.
A vital light is missing from the world, by which I mean
that ephemeral gold that spins the seen
and unseen worlds together. In my life
I don't expect to see a springtime swelling
of the shriveled nut so many spirits
have become. What's to be done?
This is the winter solstice of an age,
although the season's worst is yet to come.
What's delicate and true has come undone:
is the only fitting answer
a pure and focused rage?
Today I wove a wreath of bone and fir
and filbert withes, twined in sacred holly,
incense cedar from an ancient tree.
I wove, affixed a star, and spoke a spell:
"Let this circle stand as the gate of winter
sure passage to the days of lengthening light."
And then I whispered names in the fragrant bough
Lacing love like a scarlet ribbon through the fronds.
Long I wove and dreamed back friends and kin,
each great soul calling back the sun.
I thought at last, "My life here is not done."

The shortest day and the longest night in the ever turning calendar of the seasons, Yule is classified as a "low holiday" or lesser celebration on the Wheel of the Year, but it has always been one of my favorite observances. If you live as far north as we do, this festival in the heart of winter is one to observe with thanksgiving and reflection, with song, mulled cider, fine munchies, tales, firelight and rowdy vibrant fellowship.
From this hallowed moment onward, we will gain a few minutes of precious sunlight every day until the Summer Solstice on June 21. Let the bells ring out, and the games begin, but first, there is the shoveling of snow, for we are in the midst of a blizzard here in the north, and the world beyond the windows is white, white, white. It will remain that way for several days and nights to come, no worries about a white Christmas this year...
For some reason, I always find my Yule post vaguely unsatisfying - I write and rewrite, scan DVD after DVD in my archive, searching, always searching, for an image which will somehow encapsulate the magic of this ancient snowbound holiday. When I have finished and uploaded my post, I continue to feel that I have not done justice to the day and its timeless rites of illumination.
Sandy Jenson's lovely poem is printed in the frontispiece of one of my favorite books on solstice observances, Richard Heinberg's "Celebrate the Solstice: Honoring the Earth's Seasonal Rhythms Through Festival and Ceremony", published by Quest in 1993. Her poem is a poignant tribute to this stormy winter day on which we celebrate the triumphant return of old Helios, the ascendance of light in the fertile darkness of winter.

Yesterday I wrote about the foundation stones of the city of New Jerusalem being inscribed with the names of the 12 Apostles, and Jesus being the chief cornerstone (Rev 21:14). I remarked on the verse from Ephesians 2:19-21:
"So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God's household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord,"
Jesus is the chief cornerstone, the apostles are the foundation, the 12 tribes are the gates, and you and I are each a stone that fits together building the city walls surrounding the glory of the LORD Who dwells there. We are not only His church, His bride, but we are His temple.
Today I want to turn to the cornerstone and talk about the drink offering.
I was thinking about Paul's wonderful final words: "For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith;" (2 Timothy 4:6-7). Paul said four wonderful things here. In the second verse, the trio of things Paul says He did for the Lord are a model for us: "fight the good fight", "finish the course", and "keep the faith". Good principles for all of us today. But curiously in the first part of the verse, Paul declares he has "poured himself out as a drink offering." Hmmm. What "is" a drink offering, anyway?
The first time a drink offering is mentioned in the bible is in Genesis 35:14. It is only one of two offerings to be given before the Law was delivered, the other being the burnt offering. We hear a lot about the sacrificial offerings and the sin offerings and the trespass offerings, but not a lot about the drink offering.
In the Genesis verse, God descends and speaks to Jacob. It is in this verse that God changes Jacob's name to Israel and promises certain blessings over him and his descendants. (Gen 35: 9-14). Then God ascends.
In verse 15, Jacob/Israel then sets up a pillar. The Hebrew word for pillar is "something stationary, i.e. A monumental stone."
"Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He had spoken with him, a pillar of stone, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it. So Jacob named the place where God had spoken with him, 'Bethel'."
Bethel means "house of God". So not only the geographical location was named House of God, but Jacob laid the cornerstone of the house of God that is referred to in Revelation, which shows us the competed house, the City of God- New Jerusalem. The first stone was laid at this moment, actually and metaphorically, and so the cornerstone is our Savior.
Jacob next poured out wine as a drink offering. As mentioned, the drink offering was one sacrifice given prior to the Law. And except for this one time, the drink offering was not meant to be given alone, it always accompanied other offerings.
"In contrast to the Levitical offerings, which all speak of the work of Christ each in a different aspect, the drink offering speaks of the joy in the complement of that work. This explains why the drink offering is not mentioned in the opening up of the book of Leviticus which speaks of man's approach to God. This approach can only be on the basis of the death of Christ, and so there we have detailed all the offerings except the drink offering, which speaks not of the work or the death of Christ, but the joy of God in the completed work."
The Chief Cornerstone being laid is the beginning of that work, the Apostles who continued that work are the foundation stones, and each believer is a temple stone fitted together building up His New Jerusalem. When the full number of believers has been reached, (Romans 11:25) the City will be finished and we will be raptured to it.
There is much more to the drink offering of course, I am only scratching the surface. Paul's reference to pouring himself out is a good reminder to us, that we need to pour ourselves out. Pouring indicates a steady stream. Not meted out in discrete chunks at a slow pace, with gaps. But a steady stream of continual offering of our life's blood to Jesus. At your life's end, or at the rapture, will you be able to say you are emptied, having fought the good fight, finished the course, and kept the faith? Have you flung yourself on the Chief Cornerstone? Are you pouring yourself out to the Lord daily in a steady stream?
We kiss the Blarney Stone, we touch the Temple stone, we step on Plymouth Rock, kings are crowned on the Stone of Scone, Muslims pray before the Black Stone of the Kaaba, but they are all pretender stones. In each of those stones only a part of the body and soul is given. The Chief Cornerstone is Jesus and the only way to approach Him is by pouring your entire self upon it. It is the least we can do, because He first poured Himself out upon us.

Crowleyanity is a cult, Thelema transcends linguistic, behavioral,
and socio-economic forms. you can tell Crowleyanity by the fact

maniacal travesty. as the Beast is taken more and more as an idol
he is rejected by the sincerely virtuous and willful. as a cult,
it is prudent to repudiate and oppose its prevalence except as a
choice of extremes available to the free, along with so many
other fundamentalist and fanatic religious groups. the problem
with "smashing cults" is that there is absolutely no way to
firmly and resolutely separate levels of organic cultural
movements into 'bad' and 'good' by label, rather than reacting
to their behaviors and the dogmas they instruct and require.
the (C)OTO does not require belief in any particular idea or
principle. if one can with integrity undergo its initiatory
membership admission, then obedience to civil law and adherence
to rational interpretations of its oaths combined with moderate
annual dues are typically all that is required for a continued
amiable relationship. those who tell you much differently (I
may be missing some minor point) may be a part of the cult of
Crowleyanity which intersects with this order, and should be
questioned thoroughly and made known to the rest of membership
so its constitution is clear where their authority is
unchallenged.

to what actions of each OTO do you refer? surely the (C)OTO
has taken many actions which set the trend in motion and
perpetuate it. this can be explained as a transitional
attempt to ground the Current into human consciousness for

to inspire the true will. whether the dangers of inspiring
cultism are worth potential attendant liberation many
religions can and will answer decidedly in the affirmative.
but what of the others of which you speak? I know little of
their cult-inspiring activities beyond the writings of some
of the contestants (e.g. Grant, Motta). are they inspiring
some cult or another? what are the characteristics of these?

(C)OTO (and the rest of them for that matter) is merely an
organization. it may no more be identified with Thelema as
I understand it than the Roman Catholic Church ought be
identified with Christianity or the Church of Satan with
Satanism. the most which can be said is that an overt and
modern religious movement has been inspired by and
continues to be overlapping with these organizations, each
having their own virtues and problems. to identify the orgs
with the movements or the ideals is to aggrandize them in
a biased and unworthy manner, since their sociological and
idealistic aspects transcend the orgs which contributed to
their fruition.
to presume that "OTO member" equates to "Thelemite" is to
disregard clear evidence that, except for the most crude
and least valuable interpretation of the latter ('Thelemite'
equals 'member of the religious cult of "Thelema"'), this
is in many cases completely untrue.

taking titles seriously, we judge the book by the cover.

and hir actions. failing this, we are prone to rumour-
mongering, backbiting, and the host of follies rampant
amidst the immature Herd. cleave to the tried and true,
reflect direct experience, and we'll all benefit.

I don't think that any other person than Aleister Crowley
is being discussed as the author of any of these works,
since he was the physical body originating the text. the
text in question has varied from the Evul Book to essays
considered "secret" and in some cases "sacred". many of
us, and I dare say MOST Thelemites, do not consider any
of Crowley's works to be of value or to be representative
of any kind of 'Law', and the belief rampant within the
cult of Crowleyanity that it somehow constitutes the
host of examples of the "New Aeon" is woeful evidence to
the contrary (belief being but another example of its
slavery to the conceptual utterances of a favoured author).

any shackle is restrictive. accepting the raiments of the
cult does not demonstrate liberation, it just confirms
the paucity of the source which inspires it. every new
Crowleyan cult generated confirms the folly and potent
error of the man's expression. every individual standing
free of the Herd in strength and ability who has in some
way been provided means in reflection of the man's
product is a testimony to his Thelemic inspiration.
arguing whether some prophet is of a particular species
is like disputing with theologians regarding the
combined spatial requirements of dancing spirits. it is
of little or no relevance to the activity of and
reflection on interaction with them and the
repercussions of this interaction.
