1. CHARLES DICKENS
The author of such beloved books as "A Tale of Two Cities" and "A Christmas Carol" was notoriously fussy about his working conditions. He kept to a military-strict schedule, always writing in his study between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. before striking off on three-hour walks. Dickens demanded total silence in his house during his work hours, and required that his pens, ink and a small collection of statuettes be specially arranged on his desk to help him think. The author carried these talismans with him wherever he traveled, and he would even rearrange furniture in hotels and guesthouses to recreate the layout of his home office as closely as possible. Dickens' bizarre habits also extended to his bedroom: he only slept facing north, believing that it better aligned him to the electrical currents of the Earth.
2. BEETHOVEN
Ludwig Van Beethoven did much of his work while on the move. After a daily breakfast of coffee-he often obsessively counted out 60 beans by hand-the composer would put in a few hours at his desk before heading out for long, meandering walks. These countryside jaunts supposedly helped spur his creativity, and as he walked, he often stopped to jot down a few measures of music in a large sketchbook. If the notes were slow to come, he might copy down another composer's work to study their technique. Beethoven may have also composed while bathing. According to his secretary, Anton Schindler, he would often pace around his room and repeatedly pour jugs of water over his hands while humming tunes and staring off into space in "deep meditation."
3. MARCEL PROUST

While penning his mammoth, 3,000-page novel "In Search of Lost Time" (also known as "Remembrance of Things Past") in the early 1900s, the French writer Marcel Proust lived largely from within the confines of his bedroom. He usually didn't wake up until 3 or 4 in the afternoon, at which point he dined on coffee and croissants (often his only meal of the day) and inhaled fumes from opium-tinged tobacco powder, which he believed helped his asthma. Proust worked from the comfort of his bed, usually while propped up on several fluffy pillows. Despite the seemingly relaxed work environment, the writer still claimed that crafting his classic novel was incredibly taxing. "After ten pages," he complained, "I am shattered."
4. SALVADOR DALI
Hulton Archive/Getty Images
Salvador Dali was one of the undisputed masters of surrealism, a school of art that aimed to tap into the unconscious mind and access the buried treasures of the imagination. To help produce the hallucinatory imagery of paintings such as "The Persistence of Memory" and "Swans Reflecting Elephants," Dali used mental tricks to try and blur the line between his dreams and reality. One of his tried and true techniques involved holding a metal key over a tin pan while napping. As soon as the artist began to drift away, he would drop the key and wake up, giving him a chance to record the strange images that had flashed through his mind. Dali also devised what he called the "Paranoid-Critical" method, a creative approach that required him to work himself into a paranoid state by intentionally brooding over bizarre and illogical thoughts. Once feelings of "concrete irrationality" overwhelmed him, he would paint the unusual visions they produced in his mind's eye.
5. MAYA ANGELOU
Shareif Ziyadat/FilmMagic
The famed poet and author of "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" was famous for doing very little of her work at home. Finding the comfort of her house too distracting, Angelou elected to write in the anonymous tranquility of what she described as "tiny, mean" hotel rooms. She typically rented the rooms for months at a time, and arrived early in the morning armed with only her writing materials and a Bible, a bottle of sherry and a deck of cards (which she claimed helped busy her "little mind"). Angelou ensured that the rooms were as spare as possible to sharpen her focus, and she often wrote while reclining on her side on the hotel bed. In an interview with the "Paris Review," she confessed that one of her elbows was "rough with callouses" from lying on it for long hours each day.
6. JONATHAN EDWARDS
The 18th century Christian preacher is perhaps best remembered for the fire and brimstone rhetoric of sermons like "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," but he was also known for his meticulous approach to work. Edwards typically rose before sunrise and spent as many as 13 hours a day poring over books and penning his sermons, often skipping meals to avoid interrupting his studies. Even when he took brief breaks to chop wood or go for walks, he carried a pen and paper so he could write along the way. If struck by a particularly valuable insight while traveling on horseback or otherwise away from his desk, Edwards resorted to using a mnemonic device. He would pin a small piece of paper to a part of his clothing that reminded him of the idea, and then remove the slips one by one and scribble down the associated thoughts as soon as he had the chance.
7. B.F. SKINNER

In the mid-20th century, B.F. Skinner was the world's leading proponent of behaviorism, a school of psychology centered on the idea that human beings are blank slates whose behavior can be controlled by external circumstances. Skinner was famous for putting his ideas into practice-he raised his second daughter in a specially-designed, temperature controlled environment called an "Air Crib"-so it comes as little surprise that he also applied them to his own work life. He operated on a regimented schedule and made use of a timer to remind him when to start and stop writing. For "every twelve hours recorded on it," he wrote in his personal journal, "I plot a point on a cumulative curve, the slope of which shows my overall productivity." Along with precisely timing and analyzing his workday, Skinner was also a proponent of what is known as "segmented sleep." Rather than snoozing through the whole night, the psychologist often woke after midnight and returned to work for an hour before going back to sleep until morning.
8. DEMOSTHENES

The ancient Greek statesman Demosthenes was known for his stirring and seemingly effortless speaking ability, but his oratory prowess was the result of a rigorous and often outlandish work regime. He spent long hours studying rhetoric and law in a specially made underground study, and trained with an actor to learn how to properly control his body movements. To defeat a lisp and shortness of breath, Demosthenes practiced speaking with pebbles in his mouth, shouted his speeches aloud while running uphill and even belted them out over the sound of crashing waves at the beach. Strangest of all was his strategy for fighting procrastination. As a young man, Demosthenes shaved off all the hair on one side of his head in the hope that if he made himself look ridiculous, he would be more inclined to stay at home and concentrate on his studies.
To me, one of the essences of wicca is the kin, entity work in rebuff circles, and the individual short on of knowledge; link with a priestess in archetypal love and archetypal support.
I know represent are loads of solo practitioners out represent, and they accept speckled reasons for extract so. Maybe these are ancestors who are working out for themselves how to give themselves as the crow flies the shape. I see in your mind's eye that is entirely real, and they shouldn't dictate an outsider's blessing to do so (someone also to dub them 'initiated', if they've worked originally all this time).
Grant you, I know zero about valid ordination, and if these online schools care for with that, then I conclude that's real.
Impart is so far-flung information out there; so diverse sites that force send you towards book lists and cash. Sitting room because this. I don't see why you dictate to pay a outcast.
And to me, vending religion, vending secrets, if you force, goes against everything we are.
Equally, pronounce from ordination, to what end? Are you then avowed a priest/priestess and now you can teach/start a group? That goes against all the sense of right and wrong I referred to in trade. Where's the mentorship? How do you learn to teach and intensify and fun a dynamic group if you didn't come from that?
/rant. for now.
Our altar is placed on the kitchen's marble case. We moved to this new house some months ago, and I haven't found yet a better place to put it, and sincerely, I think that the kitchen is one of the best places for it to stay. I love my little kitchen and the shelf where the altar is placed is perfect in size for me, since I don't have many objects over it. Kitchens are very powerful places for witches, and I spend a good time over there preparing goodies for my two men. My son loves helping me when I'm cooking, so it's a warm and cosy room to be, with good vibrations. There's this amazing site about magickal kitchens that I can't take my eyes off since I learned about it!
Usually my altar is very simple and plain, like the first photo above. When we're celebrating sabbaths, I add some colored lining and images, according to the celebrations, and Lucas is always adding something, like little rocks and dried leaves he finds in his walks - the two wooden wands on the right of te photos was chosen by him. In Ostara he dyed some boiled eggs to decorate it, and in Beltane he chose the images to put on the wall (I think I said before, we follow the Southern Hemisphere Wheel of the Year, so Ostara was held in September, and Beltane, in October - now we're waiting for Mabon to arrive). As long as Lucas doesn't mess up with the objects, I let him touch everything that's displayed - he's always very respectful - only being careful when the candles are lit, of course. He loves changing the Goddess water every morning, and he often spend some seconds in front of it many times of the day, just watching, as he says. For him it's part of our lives, because he's used to it since he was a little baby. And that's exactly how I wanted it to be.

Oh no, I am a goody two shoes. I'm okay with that, it's others who want to see it as a bad thing.
Also, I was merely stating my person opinion on the terms 'white' and 'black'.
But let me explain it to you as it was explained to me:
Dark Magic: Any and all forms of mysticism that seek to cause harm and pain or force your will upon others. This includes but is not limited to hex/curses, any spell that would seek to take someones personal choices away from them, spells to cause a blight or sickness, or mysticism in a similar vein.
Light Magic: The opposite of Dark Magic. This includes but is not limited to Blessings, spells for health and healing and in most situations fertility and warmth.
However, there are some forms of magic that are inherently grey such as psychic talent and similar schools of witchcraft.
Also...I think what matters MOST is your intent.
You can intend to harm someone by using a form of Light magic...and that makes it dark magic. Love spells are technically a form of Light magic...yet if you use one to force someone to fall in love with someone else against their will...then it's dark magic.
I hope I am making sense here.
That being said...seeing demons and spirits isn't dark magic inherently. Forcing those same entities to cause harm on others, however, is.
Learning Light magic is relatively simple. Seek ways to heal, help, and bless.

Hex Hall is the first book in the series of the same name by debut author, Rachel Hawkins. It was released in the UK on 1st April 2010 by Simon and Schuster Children's and it is 336 pages long.
PLOTSophie Mercer is a teenage witch, even if she isn't a very good one. After a love spell gone terribly wrong after trying to help out a fellow classmate, Sophie finds herself in big trouble. Although she didn't know it before, there is a place for people like Sophie who get into trouble with their powers. Hex Hall is a reform school for witches, faeries, shifters and one lonely vampire aka Prodigium.
On her first day, Sophie manages to make enemies of three of the most popular and powerful witches in the school, annoy a seriously hot boy and become the roommate of the only vampire enrolled. Students soon start being attacked and the number one suspect is Sophie's roommate. There is more to these attacks than everyone thinks and it looks like Sophie has a lot to learn before she can figure out who is behind it all.
WHAT I THOUGHT
I had been torn about buying this book for quite a while as I wasn't sure that I was going to like it. Luckily, I managed to pick it up in a 3 for 2 offer in W H Smiths a few weeks back and there wasn't really anything else that I wanted as my free book. Now, I wish I had bought it a lot sooner as it was better than I had expected.
It's very rare that I truly like all of the characters in a book but Hawkins wrote them all so well that I couldn't help but love them. Even the ones I was supposed to hate had something about them that made me like them that little bit more than I probably should have. There were a couple of teachers that I thought were pretty harsh to begin with but then I realised that they had their own reasons for being the way they were.
I really loved Sophie and I felt for her in the situation she had been forced into. When she arrives at Hex Hall, she really isn't a very good witch and has a problem carrying out even the simplest of spells, which doesn't go down well with the other witches in the school. Sophie was raised by her human mother who was no help with her magic at all so it wasn't surprising that she didn't know everything that she was supposed to. As she was completely out of her element, I couldn't help but feel sorry for her and hope that she got better and quickly.
Another thing that I liked about Sophie was that she wasn't about to bow down to anyone else and do what they wanted just so that she would fit in. Elodie and the mean girl witches tried their hardest to get Sophie to join their coven but knowing what they were like, she continuingly says no because she knows what kind of girls they really are. Jenna (the lesbian vampire roommate) is probably the most hated girl in school but Sophie is determined to stick by her and believe that she is innocent. Jenna was a great addition to the story and I loved how funny she was. A teenage vampire that is completely girly and addicted to pink (in any way possible) was a bit of a shock to me but she ended up being one of my favourites.
Archer Cross was a fabulous main male character. There was a certain air of mystery about him the whole way through the story and I was never completely sure what to make of him. His intentions seem real at some parts but then at others, he seems like a different person, making me not want to trust him. The end of the book saw Archer in a kind of purgatory and Hawkins left us guessing as to what happens to him. I really hope in future books he makes another appearance and that I finally get to know what he is really all about. Archer Cross is hot, mysterious and seems like he can really kick ass! What more could you ask for?
The story was so much better than I had been expecting and I was hooked within a couple of pages. Sophie and the world of Prodigium drew me in straight away and I wanted to know more about how all of these different people were going to get along, being forced in a school together. I was so happy to see that each different species I guess you would call it were like cliques in high school. The faeries didn't like the witches and the witches didn't like the shifters...you get my meaning.
The dialogue is witty and humorous throughout and exactly what I would expect from teenagers. Don't take that as a bad thing though, even if I make it sound like it was too predictable. Hawkins managed to make these teenagers seem as real as possible while taking into account their special abilities and powers. I would definitely expect to see teenage witches trying to make the most beautiful dresses with their magic because after all, that is probably the kind of thing I would be doing.
Hex Hall is a fabulous debut novel and I cannot wait for more from Rachel Hawkins. I loved this book so much that I read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. If you haven't been sure about this one like me then I urge you to give it a try. I highly recommend this one!

There is a song in the greenwood,
There's an age old tale to be sung,
Healing is there in the greenwood,
Spiralling endlessly under the sun.
Seat yourself under the oak trees,
Watch the leaf dust dance in the breeze,
Breathe in the flowers and catkins,
The slow buzzing motion of bees.
I give you a song from the greenwood,
A song to enchant and delight,
Refrains of sowing and reaping,
The lyrics of life at its height.
Join in the dance of the greenwood,
Cast off your woes if you dare,
Life will be sweet in the greenwood,
Far from all hurry and care.
Hold high the cup of forgetting,
Drink deep of the greenwood wine,
Partake of the wildwood nectar,
So honey sweet from the vine.
Hear ye the pipes of the greenwood,
Far off music and dancing feet?
Ye shall be healed in the greenwood,
One with the earth's heartbeat.
This madcap song for the greenwood was written by me, and profuse apologies are owing to Jethro Tull and its magnificent creation, Songs From the Wood, which was the inspiration for my mediocre undertaking.
It's May, it's May, the merry month of May, and here we are again at Beltane or May Day. The most thoughtful and eloquent article on this lovely ancient Celtic fire festival I have ever encountered is by Waverly Fitzgerald of the exquisite Living In Season blog, and it may be read here at her web site, the School of the Seasons. There is a rambling effort of mine own on this festive day at my old untended Geocities site.
Beltane (or May Day) blessings to each and every one of you!
