Historical Roots to Modern PracticeThe roots of the religion called Wicca, or Witchcraft, are very old, comingdown to us through a variety of channels worldwide. Although any generalstatement about our practices will have exceptions, the following will attemptto present a basic foundation for understanding. Some of the old practices werelost when indigenous religions encountered militant Christianity and wereforced to go underground for survival. The ancient mystery religions were lostwhen the practice of the rites was stopped and the old oral traditions were nolonger available. Parents transmitted their traditions to their children, withparts being lost and new parts created in succeeding generations. Thesesurvivals, along with research into the old ways, provide a rich foundation formodern practice. Other factors contributing to the revival of the Craft arearchaeological and anthropological studies of the religious practices ofnon-Christian cultures, the works of the Golden Dawn and other metaphysicalorders, and the liberalization of anti-Witchcraft laws.Modern Witches hold rituals according to the turning of the seasons, the tidesof the moon, and personal needs. Most rituals are performed in a ritual spacemarked by a circle. We do not build church buildings to create this sacred,ritual space -- all Earth is sacred and in touch with the Goddess and so anyplace, indoors or out, may be consecrated for ritual use. Outdoor spaces tendto be used from Ostara to Lammas, indoor spaces from Samhain to Imbolc.The CircleWithin this sacred circle, two main activities occur: celebration, and thepractice of magic. Celebration is most important at the major seasonal holydays, the Sabbats. At these times, the myths of that particular holiday areenacted in ritual drama, and dancing, singing, feasting, and revelry are allpart of the festivities. On these occasions we celebrate our oneness with lifeon Earth, as well as assimilating on the deepest level myths and archetypeswhich map and assist our own life-passages.Magic is more often performed at smaller gatherings, called Esbats, whichcoincide with the phases of the moon. Types of magic practiced include psychichealing sessions, the focus and direction of energy to achieve positiveresults, and work toward the individual spiritual development of the covenmembers. Magic is an art which requires adherence to certain principles, and aconscious direction of will toward the desired end. We believe it to be anattribute of magic that results toward which the will is directed return to thesender threefold. Therefore, Witches are very conscientious in their use ofmagic.When the celebration, teaching, or magical work is finished, the blessing ofthe Goddess (and God) is called into food and drink which are shared by all.The circle is opened, and the space is no longer consecrated.The Tools of a WitchTo create the circle, and in the working of magic, we use tools to facilitate aframe of mind in which the psychic state necessary for this kind of work can beachieved. The tools are part of a complete and self-consistent symbolic systemwhich is agreed upon by the participants and provides them with a "map" forentry into unfamiliar psychic spaces. Such a system, like a map, is arbitraryand not "true" in an absolute sense; it is a guide to a state which isineffable and can be most clearly reached through the arts (poetry, music,dance, drama) and "starlight" vision.A primary tool, which is owned by most Witches, is an athame or ritual knife.The athame is charged with the energy of the owner and is used as a pointer todefine space (such as casting a sacred circle) and as a conductor of theowner's will and energy.Other important tools are the symbols on the altar which denote the"Aristotelian" Elements: Earth, Air, Fire, and Water (some "maps" includeSpirit). A pentagram or pentacle (a five-pointed star sometimes surrounded bya circle) is often used to symbolize Earth and its properties -- stability,material wealth, the body, and practical affairs. Alternatively, a small dishof salt or soil can be used to symbolize the Earth Element. A thurible (orcenser) or a bell can be used to symbolize Air and its properties --communications, vitality, intellect and understanding. (A sword or wand may beused to symbolize Air or Fire, and many "maps" disagree on with which elementthe sword or wand should be associated.) A candle or small pot of fire maysymbolize the element of Fire and its properties -- will, transmutation,life-force, and power. A chalice of water is used to symbolize the element ofWater and its properties -- cleansing, regeneration, and emotion. In thetraditions which include the element of Spirit, an ankh, keppen rod or quartzcrystal is used to symbolize Spirit and its properties -- perfection,summation, balance, illumination and eternity.There are many other minor tools which are used for some specific purposeswithin magical workings, but the tools described above are the basic ones usedin the practice of Witchcraft, and many of the minor tools are extrapolationsof the basic ones (e.g. the broom of the wand, the sword of the athame, thecauldron of the cup, etc.)Personal DevelopmentSince these tools are merely the conductors of personal energies, as copper isa conductor for electrical energy, most covens provide at least some degree oftraining in psychic skills and healing practices to strengthen each member'sability to participate in the religious activities. Each individual decideswhat level of such training is useful for them. We see psychic abilities as anatural human potential, and are dedicated to developing this as well as all ofour positive human potentials.

I always smile when one of my students tells me that he can't wait until he graduates and can read only what he wants to read. That day never comes. I know that he has this image of free time, rest, and endless days with his only major decision being which game to watch, or which book to read. Unfortunately, for those in any ministry, reality always maintains a demanding stack of books and articles that must be read. Sorry, but that's how it is. I even imagine people walking into heaven and receiving a stack of books to read (no, not really... but then again, it wouldn't surprise me). All that to say, imagined free time is usually simply that, imagined.
I am on my first sabbatical this semester. For the last seven years, I think I imagined being able to spend it holed up in a cabin in the mountains, fly fishing in the early mornings, writing during the days, and taking Mary to local restaurants in the evenings (or eating some of the trout I caught that morning!). At least, that's how I imagined it. The actual reality is not terrible, but it has not been anywhere near the slow lane in a mountain retreat that I imagined.
In the last few months I have led a mission team to the Peruvian Andes, mentored pastors in the Ecuadorian jungle and mountains, taught IMB missionaries in Lima, taught Ecuadorian national pastors in Patate, taught IMB strategy-coordinator REAP churches, led BSU summer missionary orientation in Peru, finished writing Ministering among Animistic Oral Cultures: Reaching and Teaching the Highland Quichuas, and tried to exhort, edify, and encourage missionaries.
I leave again on Saturday for two more weeks. Two pastors will be joining me in Ecuador as we travel to a predominately indigenous area of Ecuador to teach them basic Bible and Church history courses. The next week they will return to the USA and a team from my home church will come to pick up the teaching where those brothers leave off, teaching the basics of systematic theology to these brothers who are so prone to aberrant doctrine and syncretism. Thanks to Jeff Love and his team, each of the brothers will receive study Bibles. And thanks to Desiring God International Outreach, they will also receive three of John Piper's books in Spanish. More than that, they will receive the fellowship and edification that always comes when God's people gather in His name to worship and praise Him.
After a couple of weeks there, I will return home to my bride (of 33 years this past week!), my precious daughter who is getting married in December, and my son, daughter-in-law, and the smartest, handsomest, most wonderful grandson in the world. After two weeks of spoiling them all, I will travel with Mary to Costa Rica to lead Spiritual Emphasis week at the Spanish Language Institute. I am so looking forward to preaching and mentoring during their Spiritual Emphasis week again this year; they encourage me more than I ever could them. I will only have one day at home when we return to the USA before I head back to Ecuador to teach national pastors for two weeks to then arrive home a couple days before Thanksgiving.
Some have said to me, "Hasn't been much of a sabbatical, has it?" Others have said, "You haven't been able to rest much, huh?" In one sense, it reminds me of the delusion that you can read only what you want after graduation. Don't count on it.
However, in another sense, it really is restful and renewing. For me it is such a blessing to travel internationally and help folks to fulfill God's call on their lives, to meet missionaries and listen to their stories, encourage the hurting, challenge the complacent, remind the downcast of God's promises, and hold out hope to those who so desperately need it. I find I am animated, refreshed, and constantly reminded of the greatest needs everywhere I go-to evangelize evangelists, disciple disciplers, teach teachers, and train trainers. A strong church makes for a prepared mission force that can reach, plant churches, teach, and lock arms to fan out into the world with God's Word held high as our banner.
Pray for me and those who send me, go with me, and welcome me back home at the end of each trip. I'd love to take each of you with me to see and meet the many needs around the world, but you only have enough time to do what God wants you to do. What is that? Are you doing it? You're either a sender or a goer. Whichever God has called you to be, do it with all your might, as unto the Lord. Grace and peace.

(REV 16, 15-21) BEHOLD, I AM COMING LIKE A THIEF
[15] ("Behold, I am coming like a thief." Blessed is the one who watches and keeps his clothes ready, so that he may not go naked and people see him exposed.) [16] They then assembled the kings in the place that is named Armageddon in Hebrew. [17] The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air. A loud voice came out of the temple from the throne, saying, "It is done." [18] Then there were lightning flashes, rumblings, and peals of thunder, and a great earthquake. It was such a violent earthquake that there has never been one like it since the human race began on earth. [19] The great city was split into three parts, and the gentile cities fell. But God remembered great Babylon, giving it the cup filled with the wine of his fury and wrath. [20] Every island fled, and mountains disappeared. [21] Large hailstones like huge weights came down from the sky on people, and they blasphemed God for the plague of hail because this plague was so severe. (CCC 2612) In Jesus "the Kingdom of God is at hand" (Mk 1:15). He calls his hearers to conversion and faith, but also to "watchfulness". In prayer the disciple keeps watch, attentive to Him Who Is and Him Who Comes, in memory of his first coming in the lowliness of the flesh, and in the hope of his second coming in glory (Cf. Mk 13; Lk 21:34-36). In communion with their Master, the disciples' prayer is a battle; only by keeping watch in prayer can one avoid falling into temptation (Cf. Lk 22:40, 46). (CCC 1243) The white garment symbolizes that the person baptized has "put on Christ" (Gal 3:27), has risen with Christ. The "candle," lit from the Easter candle, signifies that Christ has enlightened the neophyte. In him the baptized are "the light of the world" (Mt 5:14; cf. Phil 2:15). The newly baptized is now, in the only Son, a child of God entitled to say the prayer of the children of God: "Our Father." (CCC 2849) Such a battle and such a victory become possible only through prayer. It is by his prayer that Jesus vanquishes the tempter, both at the outset of his public mission and in the ultimate struggle of his agony (Cf. Mt 4:1-11; 26:36-44). In this petition to our heavenly Father, Christ unites us to his battle and his agony. He urges us to "vigilance" of the heart in communion with his own. Vigilance is "custody of the heart," and Jesus prayed for us to the Father: "Keep them in your name" (Jn 17:11; Cf. Mk 13:9, 23, 33-37; 14:38; Lk 12:35-40). The Holy Spirit constantly seeks to awaken us to keep watch (Cf. 1 Cor 16:13; Col 4:2; 1 Thess 5:6; 1 Pet 5:8). Finally, this petition takes on all its dramatic meaning in relation to the last temptation of our earthly battle; it asks for "final perseverance". "Lo, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is he who is awake" (Rev 16:15).

A friend of mine sent me a wonderful story published long ago with commentary on the life of Elijah. Below are a few high points that stuck out to me. The original was much longer and if you are interested in the full version from the 'Review and Herald' please let me know. The people of God today are in need of men and women who are willing to stand for the truth even if it is difficult and unpopular. Will you be one of those? The following is absolutely awesome Elijah, with stern and commanding voice, cries out, "How long halt ye between two opinions? If the Lord be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word." Not one in that vast assembly dare utter one word for God, and show their loyalty to Jehovah.^A {RH, September 30, 1873 par. 8} What astonishing deception and fearful blindness had, like a dark cloud, covered Israel. This blindness and apostasy had not closed about them suddenly, but it had come upon them gradually, as they had not heeded the word of reproof and warning which the Lord had sent to them because of their pride and their sins. They, in this fearful crisis, in the presence of the idolatrous priests and the apostate king, remain neutral. IF GOD ABHORS ONE SIN ABOVE ANOTHER, OF WHICH HIS PEOPLE ARE GUILTY, IT IS OF DOING NOTHING IN A CASE OF EMERGENCY. INDIFFERENCE OR NEUTRALITY IN A RELIGIOUS CRISIS IS REGARDED OF GOD AS A GRIEVOUS CRIME; AND EQUAL TO THE VERY WORST TYPE OF HOSTILITY AGAINST GOD. {RH, September 30, 1873 par. 9} The people upon the mountain prostrate themselves in terror and awe before the unseen God. They cannot look upon the bright, consuming fire sent from Heaven. They fear that they will be consumed in their apostasy and sins. They cry out with one voice, which resounds over the mountain, and echoes to the plains below them with terrible distinctness, "The Lord, he is the God; the Lord, he is the God." Israel is at last aroused and undeceived. They see their sin and how greatly they have dishonored God. Their anger is aroused against the prophets of Baal. With fearful terror, Ahab and Baal's priests witnessed the wonderful exhibition of Jehovah's power. Again is heard, in startling words of command, the voice of Elijah to the people, "Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape." And the people were ready to obey the word of Elijah. They seized the false prophets who had deluded them, and brought them to the brook Kishon, and there Elijah, with his own hand, slew these idolatrous priests.^A {RH, October 7, 1873 par. 1} The judgments of God have been executed upon the false priests; the people have confessed their sins, and have acknowledged their fathers' God; and now the withering curse of God is to be withdrawn, and he will again refresh the earth with dew and rain, renewing his blessings unto his people.^A {RH, October 7, 1873 par. 2} Elijah addressed Ahab, "Get thee up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of abundance of rain." While Ahab went up to feast, Elijah went up from the fearful sacrifice to the top of Mount Carmel to pray. His work of slaying the pagan priests did not unfit him for the solemn exercise of prayer. He had performed the will of God. After he had, as God's instrument, done what he could to remove the cause of Israel's apostasy, in slaying the idolatrous priests, he could do no more. He then intercedes in behalf of sinning, apostate Israel. In the most painful position, he bowed with his face between his knees, and most earnestly supplicated God to send rain. Six times successively he sent his servant to see if there was any visible token that God had heard his prayer. He would not become impatient and faithless because the Lord did not immediately give the token that his prayer was heard. He continued in earnest prayer, sending his servant seven times, to see if God had granted any signal. His servant returned the sixth time from his outlook toward the sea, with the discouraging report that there was no sign of clouds forming in the brassy heavens. The seventh time he informed Elijah that there was a small cloud to be seen, about the size of a man's hand. This was enough to satisfy the faith of Elijah. He did not wait for the heavens to gather blackness, to make the matter sure. In that small, rising cloud, his faith hears the sound of abundance of rain. Elijah's works are in accordance with his faith. He sends a message to Ahab by his servant, "Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not."^A {RH, October 7, 1873 par. 3} Elijah's Humility. Here Elijah ventured something upon his faith. He did not wait for sight. "And it came to pass in the meanwhile, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel. And the hand of the Lord was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel."^A {RH, October 7, 1873 par. 4} Elijah had passed through great excitement and labor through the day; but the Spirit of the Lord came upon him because he had been obedient, and had done his will in executing the idolatrous priests. Some would be ready to say, What a hard, cruel man Elijah must have been! And any one who shall defend the honor of God at any risk, will bring censure and condemnation upon himself from a large class. The rain began to descend. It was night, and the blinding rain prevented Ahab from seeing his course. Elijah, nerved by the Spirit and power of God, girded his coarse garment about him, and ran before the chariot of Ahab, guiding his course to the entrance of the city. The prophet of God had humiliated Ahab before his people. He had slain his idolatrous priests, and now he wished to show to Israel that he acknowledges Ahab as his king. As an act of special homage, he guided his chariot, running before it to the entrance of the gate of the city.^A {RH, October 7, 1873 par. 5} After his first appearance to Ahab, denouncing upon him the judgments of God because of his and Israel's apostasy, God directed his course from Jezebel's power to a place of safety in the mountains, by the brook Cherith. He honored Elijah by sending food to him morning and evening, by an angel of Heaven. Then as the brook became dry he sent him to the widow of Sarepta and wrought a miracle daily, to keep the widow's family and Elijah in food. After he had been blessed with evidences of such love and care from God, we would suppose Elijah would never distrust God. But the apostle tells us he was a man of like passions as we, and subject, as we are, to temptations.^A {RH, October 7, 1873 par. 8} Elijah should have trusted in God who had warned him when to flee, and where to find an asylum from the hatred of Jezebel, secure from the diligent search of Ahab. The Lord had not warned him, at this time, to flee. He had not waited for the Lord to speak to him. He moved rashly. God would have shielded his servant, and would have given him another signal victory in Israel, in sending his judgments upon Jezebel, had he waited with faith and patience.^A {RH, October 7, 1873 par. 12} Weary and prostrate, Elijah sat down to rest. He was discouraged, and felt like murmuring. He said, "Now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers." He feels that life is no more desirable. He expected, after the signal display of God's power in the presence of Israel, that they would be true and faithful to God. He expected that Jezebel would no longer have influence over the mind of Ahab, and that there would be a general revolution in the kingdom of Israel. When the threatening message which has come from Jezebel is delivered to him, he forgets that God is the same all-powerful and pitiful God that he was when he prayed to him for fire from Heaven, and it came, and for rain, and it came. God had granted every request; yet Elijah is a fugitive, far from the homes of men, and wishing never to look upon man again.^A {RH, October 7, 1873 par. 13} How did God look upon his suffering servant? Did he forsake him because despondency and despair had seized him? Oh! no. Elijah was prostrated with discouragement. All day had he toiled without food. When he guided the chariot of Ahab, running before it to the gate of the city, he was strong of courage. He had high hopes of Israel, that, as a nation, they would return to their allegiance to God, and again be reinstated in his favor. But the reaction which frequently follows elevation of faith, marked and glorious success, was pressing upon Elijah. He was exalted to Pisgah's top, to be humiliated in the lowliest valley in faith and feeling. But God's eye is still upon his servant. He loves him no less while he is feeling broken-hearted and forsaken of God and man, than when, in answer to his prayer, the fire flashed from Heaven, illuminating Carmel.^A {RH, October 7, 1873 par. 14} Those who have not borne weighty responsibilities, who have not been accustomed to feel very deeply, cannot understand the feelings of Elijah, and be prepared to give him the tender sympathy he deserves. God knows, and can read, the heart's sore anguish under temptation and severe conflict. As Elijah slept under the juniper tree, a soft touch and pleasant voice aroused him. He starts at once in his terror, as if to flee, as though his enemy, in pursuit of his life, had indeed found him. But in the pitying face of love bent upon him, he sees not the face of an enemy, but a friend. An angel of God has been sent with food from Heaven to sustain the faithful servant of God. His voice says to Elijah. "Arise and eat." After Elijah had partaken of the refreshment prepared for him, he again slumbered. The second time the angel of God ministers to the wants of Elijah. He touches the exhausted, weary man, and in pitying tenderness says to him, "Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee." Elijah was strengthened, and pursued his journey to Horeb. He was in a wilderness. He lodged in a cave for protection at night from the wild beasts.^A {RH, October 7, 1873 par. 15} Here God met with Elijah through one of his angels, and inquired of him, "What doest thou here, Elijah?" I sent thee to the brook Cherith, I sent thee to the widow of Sarepta, I sent thee to Samaria with a message to Ahab, but who sent you this long journey into the wilderness? And what errand have you here? Elijah mourns out his bitterness of soul to the Lord. Something that every working magician will eventually have to wrestle with is the question: When do you toss a piece of lore out of one's system?
(By "working magician," I mean those people who get up off the sofa and spend time actually casting spells and performing magic, rather than just reading about it.)
Now in the traditional hierarchies, the answer is: When your superiors tell you to. Therefore, First Order is ordered by Second Order when to abandon lore and procedures; and in return, Second Order is guided by the Third Order (Secret Chiefs). This answer is all and fine, provided that you are actually in a Strict Obedience/Observance Order, and are willing to take orders.
But most working magicians, or at least the ones that I have dealt with, tend to be lousy at taking orders. And most Strict Observance Orders will rapidly kick out or lose their working magicians. The reason for this is that experience quite often conflicts with "authorized lore" and most Strict Observance are knee-deep in the idea that "authorized lore" is the best, and sometimes only, way to accomplish magical goals.
A few years ago, I was present when a new Strict Observence Order was being started. One day, the subject of Atlantis came up. I stated my opinion that Atlantis was one of those pieces of lore that needed to be kicked to the curb. The leader of the group flatly told me that I was wrong because the GH Frater S used Atlantis in his lessons, therefore it was tradition and had to be included in the system. At this point, I started to look for the escape pod.
(No, I did not leave just over the fact that Atlantis was being included in the system; there was also plenty of administration issues that made me want to bail out of the system.)
Now, in my case, I had good reasons to bolt over the issue of Atlantis. In an earlier group, I had seen the concept of Atlantis being used, and watched the group jump off the rails. Fortunately, there was a working magician at the helm, who rapidly pulled the plug before the group became an outright doomsday cult. Nevertheless, it permanently associated Atlantis with the rancid smell of some lesser evil in my mind.
And unlike the leader, who insisted that I was wrong, I actually had spent some time researching the importance that was attached to Atlantis down though the years. Atlantis was a footnote in Greek mythology and philosophy, something ignored by the esoteric tradition for over two thousand years. It wasn't until the question of why there was similar animals in the New World, as well as human beings and those pesky pyramids arose that Atlantis was dug out of the rubbish bin.
(We all know that human beings have to be told about the concept of stacking rocks on top of one another it is not like the idea naturally occurs to us when we have plenty of rocks and spare labor at hand.)

A few years ago, I remember a great fuss was being made over this one book (it does not matter which one). At the time, I had no opinion of the book; it wasn't one that I ever worked with. Later on, I did work with the book if the material was copied, it worked just fine
if it was unique, well, it sucked rocks on toast. The book was enshrined as the only way to accomplish certain things; and quite honestly based on my own results, I doubt that anyone who was busy talking about how great the book was, actually used any of the unique material in the book. In the end, I used other methods to accomplish the same goals.
And yes, I know, I know
just because the material did not work for me does not mean that it was not the proper way to do things. After all, we all know that I am complete and utter plotz without no respect for traditional and properly authorized esoteric lore. But I am a working magician, and the method I use to determine if some lore or magical prodecure remains in my tool box is RESULTS. If it does not work for me, I take it out to the curb and leave it by the rubbish bin. Of course, that habit makes me very unwelcome in the Strict Observance to the Shrine of Official Authorized Occult Lore circles. But that is ok, I prefer to do my drinking in the company of working magicians.

This year, however, I have to admit I'm a little bit nervous - because I'm giving a talk there myself. My talk is apparently timed to start at 11am, so at least it'll be finished by lunchtime and I can have a nice glass of wine in the bar to celebrate.
