THE HERMIT - MAJOR ARCANUM IXAstrological Association: VirgoElemental Association: Earth
Occult Name: The Prophet of the Eternal; the Magus of the Voice of Power
Hebrew Letter: Yod (hand)
Timing: August 23rd to September 22nd (the same as the Magician).
Kabbalistic Path: Between Chesed and Tiphareth
"Yod"
When we encounter the Hermit he will lead us to enlightenment. What it is we seek to find, he has already searched out, and can pass on what he has learnt. Our higher self can be the wise mentor we'd hoped to find. As such this encounter can be internal, but too may be an external one.
The Hermit seeks the peace of solitude, but not in and of itself. When we strive to access inner wisdom, by default we are going to be more successful when alone and uninterrupted. There is need to reflect, meditate, and comprehend.
When we steep ourselves in wisdom, and are dealing with little else in our respective life, what we face is misunderstanding, as well as others having no idea why we talk from such a plane of perspective or thought. The deeper we get, the more we lose touch with life as we knew it.
This guy will live on the fringes of society. That's okay because it allows him to do what he does best. But on the other hand it provides for some degree of marginalization. He can't really complain about being ignored by the bulk of people though, his ways provoke this to be the case.
This card suggests that when taking time out from society to commune with one's inner wisdom, it's easy to lose perspective on how the outside world works. It's going to get harder to get back into it if you've forgotten how to appreciate other people. After a while the desire to co-mingle with, or demonstrate a tolerance for others is all but lost.
This reflective fellow, it goes without saying, is not ever going to be the one with the lampshade on his head at the next neighborhood barbecue party. But this is all part and parcel of what he is. Those who seek to find insight will know to slip away from the goings on to come looking for him.
