William, the Project Manager, had arrived in Salem a couple of days prior to the shoot, to assist me in the studio. He and I both knew this was going to be a tough shoot and that there was no way I could do it alone. My vision was complex and required manipulating air/fabrics/shadows AND lighting. So, a couple of months ago William volunteered to come and assist me (he also had business to tend to in Salem). The vision was of Therese in a canoe with her staff, floating toward the mists...then parting them with her staff and of course her majick. I knew it was going to be difficult...but, I had no idea that it would require two assistants, me, and Therese to bring the vision into this realm/reality. Fortunately, Freyja was watching out for the project yet again...by sending Tabitha and William. We simply could not have achieved these shots without the two of them.Therese was dressed and ready to begin when she arrived. However, my vision called for her hair to be up (very Goddess like), and since she did not know exactly what I wanted, she left it up to me to do it. Being the considerate person that Therese is, she came equipped with an assortment of pins and clasps for me to choose from. She also had several outfits w/props for me to choose from. However, when I first saw Therese upon arrival, I knew she nailed the outfit from the get-go! We got her hair done and decided upon the props to be used, then proceeded. Even before we began the shoot, my eyes quickly began fogging up...as if there were a film of vaseline over my iris'. I rubbed, clawed, used eye drops, etc...but it got no better. I had to rely on William to tell me if the beginning shots were in focus or not. All I could see on the LED screen of the camera was a very blurred image...but, somehow I knew they were good, and instincts told me to keep going. That's just what I did...with NO clear vision. After the shoot, when I called it a wrap...I was helping take Therese's hair down, it occurred to me that her hair seemed damp and slick. I asked her if she had hair oil in it...she confirmed. Instantly I realized that I had literally blurred my eyes with oil (as I have a bad habit of touching my eyes without realizing it)! However, even without 20/20 the shoot was a smashing success!So, the moral of this story is...obviously, I won't be helping with hair again. It is critical that your photog has her eyes! hee hee :} You'll never know it when you see her shots though, they are truly gorge and VERY, VERY mystical!Therese, Tabitha, and William worked so hard prior to, during, and after the shoot. You all were a pleasure to work with and I cannot thank you enough. We experienced intensity, focused thoughts, some laughs, and had some majickal assistance from time to time. But, most importantly...I called it a "wrap" knowing that we had just created and achieved something quite extraordinary. I also knew at that point, this shoot would be impossible "re-create" ever again.Mission Accomplished :}

It should be old news to anyone reading this site on a regular basis that telephone psychics are some of the biggest fakes around. Performing a real psychic reading over the phone for someone you know well is difficult enough, but for complete strangers paying by the minute? Forget it.
Just in case anyone is still on the fence about the possibility that a commercial phone psychic is likely to be for real, this article posted over the weekend at Salon should be required reading. As it turns out, "psychic hotlines" don't even cast around looking for psychics, but rather for actors to play them on the phone.
"Phone actors wanted. Work from home. Make your own hours."
Could it be true? Or was this some sort of telemarketing scheme? I called the number. A friendly man assured me that this was completely legit.
"You've heard of the Psychic Friends Network, haven't you?" he asked. "This is just like that."
Yes, I had seen the commercials. My brothers and I mocked the company's spokeswoman Dionne Warwick. When we were little kids, our parents took us to one of her performances at a Lake Tahoe hotel. She sang a few songs, coughed and asked for water. It was a short show, and my parents were disappointed they had wasted money on it.
"The thing is, I'm not sure that I'm psychic," I confessed. There were times I suspected things were going to happen before they did. But did knowing my family was going to throw me a surprise party for my 15th birthday count as mystic instinct?
"That's OK," he said. "We'll give you everything you need for the job."
And just like that, the author was on her way to being hired.
She explains that the company trained her to do basic card readings without even much instruction about what the cards meant. The goal was not to predict the future, but to shower the clients with as much positive information as possible to keep them on the phone regardless of the cards drawn. In fact, she turned out to not be particularly good at the job, simply because she didn't relish faking people out as much as some of her colleagues.
But I began to realize why I got rejected from the theater program in college. My role-playing skills sucked. This job came more easily to others. My friend Russ, a talented actor, worked for another psychic hotline. He thoroughly enjoyed perpetrating a fraud. He told me that he started each call by saying that he just drank a vial of lamb's blood to give him fortune-telling superpowers.
"You can't be serious. Does that really work?"
"Some idiots believe me," he said. "But most people just think I'm funny, and we wind up having a nice talk."
And, presumably, an expensive one to boot. Without any real psychic insight at all. One of the problems with a society in which most people don't really believe in paranormal powers is companies like this one, who figure that since it's all fake anyway it doesn't really matter who they hire as long as they sound good on the phone. But I have to say, I'll take that any day in exchange for the freedom to write about magick without having to worry about being hunted by angry mobs.
And yes, I take full responsibility for the terrible pun that is the title of this article. I just couldn't resist.
Tohu and Bohu: so the Hebrews named the broken creation, the shells of Chaos and Desolation that preceded the founding of this world. Sitting here alone in the darkness of my mind, this seems an entirely appropriate metaphor for the abased state of the human soul in the modern world. A world within which human ingenuity is focused on the cultivation of the twin Trees of Greed and Destruction. A world within which reason transcends decency. A world whose driving force is no longer the expression of joy and freedom and love, but rather the unconstrained cruelty of natural law, harnessed by human evil and unleashed on the weak with pride and gusto.
And by this law, it is natural for some to starve and some to become obese; for some to prosper and others to live lives of abject misery; for some to live and others to die, and all in a world of plenty. And here is the nexus of my horror: we have a choice. We have always had a choice. And still we deny food to the hungry.

The power of choice is that which sets us apart. It is the blessing of consciousness and the ability to live outside the brutish world of nature. And we have abdicated that choice and yielded to a dreadful inevitability that is not inevitable. In doing this we have transmogrified wealth to poverty, joy to suffering, harmony to the mass murder of war.
Every time you see a homeless person, an abused child, a starving family, a bombed town, remember: these are the products of the choices we have made, that you have made. These things are not inevitable, not for the conscious being that is man. Possibly though, human choice mirrors the awful desolation of an unimaginably vast universe within which we are truly alone: accidental fireflies, soon to be consigned to eternal night.

Is every human being alone in her head, conjuring reality from the probabilities of the quantum froth? A solitary mind dissipated through the infinite matrix of time and space. Cogito Ergo Sum! (I think, therefore I am) - a full stop behind which lies nothing, for then I am the all.

And we marvel at children having imaginary friends! Worse, are we as the secularists insist, purely physical constructs, accidentally born of a spontaneously generated quantum universe? Then truly we are the damned.

The Hebrews say that God created a void, the Tzimtzum, a place from which it withdrew that the universe might exist. A place that is of God, yet within which freedom of choice might exist for its highest creation: humans. A place possibly, where the expression of God is confined to the laws of nature, unconscious and immanent.
And so we are isolated. But more than this, even within the physical universe we are most effectively quarantined, confined to a single world in a galaxy spanning one hundred and fifty thousand light years within a universe fifteen billion light years across. We are so small, so insignificant, so lonely. Abandoned by our Gods, trapped inside the grey tissue within our skulls, quarantined by light years of empty space.
As Douglas Adams' famous character, Arthur Dent once famously said, "You might think it's a long way down to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space!"

I weep at the sky
Choose your reality! And remember, next time someone tries to convince you that the world is inevitably as it is - you have a choice. It's all that sets you apart from your dog. So exercise that choice and in whatever small way you are able, make the world just a little better for all of us. Then, even be we doomed to eternal night, we can claim the glory of valour unmatched and unique: the final voice of nature's avatar.

In a previous post, we explained the importance of clear thinking and swift action whenever a person wants to use magic to reconcile with a lover (or, honestly, even if you don't plan to use magic but still want to reconcile.) In case of such emergencies, I offer the following to help you stay ready.STEP 1: HEALING.This is both a de-stressing and also negativity-cleansing act. It will help you recover yourself so that you'll be at your best once the real love magic begins. This is a simple recipe for a Healing Herb Bath taken from Scott Cunningham's recipe book:3 parts rosemary 2 parts lavender 2 parts rose1 part peppermint1 part cinnamon(Note: I also like to add some rue to this bath, but if it's not available don't worry about it and stick to the original recipe.)Simply tie up the herbs in a cheesecloth or a large coffee filter, and add them to the tub while it fills with hot water. You can also, alternately, steep the herbs in a large pot, strain them, and add this liquid to your bath. Myself, I like to keep things simple.Whatever you do to add the infusion, get into the tub and soak for a time, ensuring that you immerse your whole body including your head and hair. How long you should remain in the water varies person to person, but most people recommend you stay for at least 5 minutes. I like to stay 30 minutes when it comes to magical baths. When you first get into the water, concentrate earnestly on releasing all the hurt and bad feelings in you, and undoing any physical damage which events may have caused (people have been known to have stress-induced heart attacks after losing a loved on, not to mention the more common anxiety attacks and depression that can also follow such events.) You may scrub yourself in the bath with a washcloth or body brush, but DO NOT USE SOAP IN THIS BATH as there might be conflicting odors or energies. Consider the focus of this bath to be wholly spiritual, not physical. Baths are very powerful magic when done correctly, and should be taken seriously.You can read some more information about spiritual baths in this post.STEP 2: MENTAL PREPARATION.Many people are experienced at meditation or other means of clearing their mind. Many other people are not. Mint is a well-known ingredient for promoting mental clarity, and it may be beneficial if you can drink mint teas and burn mint incense or diffuse essential oils during this period. It is also an uncrossing ingredient, and if you think that someone may have done malicious work to ruin your relationship, this can also help ease things.At this point, you've really got to consider whether this is going to be worth it. Lots of people who start out feeling sure this is the route for them give up after a few weeks because it's just too much sacrifice. Be sure of yourself.STEP 3: SPELLS.If the breakup has been very recent, as in hours or a few days, it's my observation any Return Lover type spell can do the job -- a sudden rush of affection or loneliness can be enough to drive them back if it's only been a short time. This is a Phase 1 type reconciliation. If it's been longer, you're in Phase 2 and you may have to start focusing on the particular problem that drove your loved one away: if they find they can live happily without you, it gets harder and harder to convince them that they'd be more happy with you. Alternately, use an indoor pot of soil and throw the soil containing the paper away after a few days. Allow the candle to burn down past the inscription before snuffing it out."If you have succeeded and brought back the lover you were seeking, it's advisable to secure the relationship to avoid further mishaps. It's actually common that a relationship which was in turmoil before doesn't last even after a reconciliation succeeds, because the old troubles remain and are often burdened even further by new resentments caused by the period of separation. Anna Riva in her book Golden Secrets of Mystic Oils recommends the following spell:"To keep a loved on true, anoint a "red candle "with a mixture of "Love" and "Controlling" oils. Beneath the candle place a square of parchment on which you have written your own and your lover's name. After sunset, burn some Fire of Love incense, and light the candle. Burn for ten minutes. Repeat the ritual each evening until your love is secure."Only you can say how much work your relationship is worth. Some romances flow smoothly, others take constant effort. For me, witches have always represented women with power, feared or respected because they embrace their abilities.
