The Grand Dame of playwrights Lillian Hellman was a hero and there are not enough of them to go around.
When it was not at first the popular stand, she stood up against the Senator McCarthy's witch-hunting committee on communism in the movie industry and refused to testify.
She decided he was fishing without enough bait.
Decided that, yes, there were communists and that communism was bad but not everyone he was trying to incriminate was a communist. And so courageously she spelled out her reason, "I will not cut my conscience to fit the year's fashion." Finally, she was proven right, but for a time she stood alone.
